Can anyone give a report on the Magens Bay Arboretum, viz., how well kept is it, how interesting is it, etc.? Do any of the original trees from the 1920s still exist?

All the trees exist. I understand a local landscape architect is heading a restoration drive.

I've seen the arboretum from the beach area, I do you gain access to it?

Hello Lisa,

The trail used to be just before the bridge and also down at the far end past the bridge - they connected but it wasn't a well marked trail. I haven't been there in several years; I recall it being just a nice forested area, didn't seem maintained - very natural but certainly not overgrown. I would imagine that some work was done in the area with the nature conservancy trail that was put in starting on the main road just passed Louisenhoj Castle. The trail goes down to Magens Bay.

Just returned Tuesday from 2 weeks on STT. One day while jogging at the Magens Bay parking area I came upon a trail toward the far southwest end. I've noticed it a few times before but have always ignored it. It is unmarked and at first glance seems like a good place to stay away from. This time my curiosity got the best of me and I began to follow it. Much to my surprise, after walking about 50 yards through a fairly dense forested area, I came upon a large clearing (several acres) in the forest. Lo and behold there was a sign identifying the area as the Magens Bay Arboretum. The clearing was beautiful to say the least. Beautiful palms and other tropical trees and plants abounded, forming almost a ceiling. The areas was eerily quiet and cool - almost surreal. It probably sounds silly, but it reminded me of the forest in the Wizard of Oz. The trail turned east, cutting through the heart of the forest and finally ended back at the parking area by the bar area. The next day I returned with my wife and we enjoyed it together. A very nice moment indeed...
