I've often seen the webcam do some funny looking things when I am checking from home. I've wondered how accurate it is.

While there, I tested it by calling my son at college and having him check for me standing in front of it. We tried for about 5 minutes and he neevr did see me. He saw boats that weren't there. People were walkng by and he didn't see them either - he said he saw no people at all.

Has anyone confirmed that the Magens Bay webcam is accurate?

We did the same thing on our trip. The first day was just as you described. The kids were describing all kinds of things in the picture - except us! Then, I told them to look at the time across the top and the picture was 2 hours old - seems they lost connection and were just showing the last known photo for hours on end.

The next day we called the kids and the 1st question I asked was what the time was on the top. It was accurate for when we were calling and the kids saw us on the very next "refresh". So - we stood there like idiots waving at the camera for the next 30 seconds or so and the kids got a kick out of seeing us waving to them from St. Thomas! I posted the last picture it took (no waves - just me talking on the phone) on my 1st trip report.

Aha...that must have been it. The connection must have been lost. This must also explain why I've sometimes looked and seen one photo with a boat and then on the refresh the boat is totally gone-----the first pic must have been old.

Will have to make sure to check the time. Thanks VI Lover.

See you on the island, Big Hat!!

I called home when I was there and the camera was running live. If you look at the time though that thing drops connection almost every day for a couple of hours, and it stops refreshing at like 5pm.
