I won a free weeks accomidations at maho bay at a silent auction/benifit for breast cancer. Is any one very familar with this camp, I have already checked it out and booked for the third week in May. I'm really not into the camp thing but figured I would give it a try. Should i make a back up reservation for accomidations or is it bearable, my girlfirend and I are in our 30/40s and in good shape. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Wow! Congrats! My husband is not really into camping, but absolutely loved our week we spent at Concordia Ecotents - a sister property of Maho Bay. I enjoy camping, so it was great for me! There are several posts on these boards about Maho and Concordia, including posts comparing the two if an option would be for you to stay at Concordia (private showers). In fact, to save money, my husband (and parents) are all willing to stay at the ecotents when we return to St John! We left St John with a new appreciation for the environment with thanks to our stay at Concordia - very educational.

Maho Bay Campground is great, it was during a week spent there that I feel in love with the USVI. As you've probably seen on their website, the tent is actually more than a tent that one would go camping in. Wooden floor, sides, screening, tent top. Beds with thinish mattresses and at the time I was there (15 years ago), mosquito netting over the bed area.

You climb up and down stairs to get back and forth to the beach and to the dining gazebo that is open air.

I would not worry about making back up reservations, you will have a very unique experience. Make sure you rent a jeep so that you can get around the island to the various really really cool spots.

Good idea to bring your own mask and snorkel and fins if you can pack them, if not, they are available to rent.....point here is that you must snorkle if you've not done that. The beach at Maho was my first peek at the underwater world and I was knocked out!

ps - I loved it so much that I now live on St. Thomas (since October)

Good to hear all of that info, my husband and I will be working at Concordia in May and hopefully a little longer. If anyone else will be there or Maho then, send me a quick email and maybe we can touch base while there.

How cool! That would be soooo neat to do! Hubby can't get off work for more than a week or so for his vacations, so that's not an option for us. However.... at this time we are planning on staying at Concordia in June (mid June) for vacation. Will you still be there then?

We would love to be! We're going to see if we can arrive around the middle of May and if all goes well extend to stay longer than a month. When I know for sure what date I can let you know, it would be great to meet up with another couple, especially since you've been there a couple times. We read your reviews and they were so helpful! We weren't sure about being assigned to Concordia since it is out of the way, I guess we had only thought about Maho. But your review set us at ease and now we're so excited about going.

Thanks! Concorida was sooooo cool. I have even brainstormed taking a group of students as an educational trip. I teach in a district that has "out of country" trips (parent-funded) and I have totally laid out a trip to St John in my mind that would combine math and science. (Like our high school band is headed to Ireland next week, the high school choir headed to Paris, a science group at my middle school headed to Florida --- hey, I could set up a group to St John!!!)

That is still sooo neat that you and your hubby are going to get to experience working there! I almost applied last year, but figured that would be too soon to leave him after getting married. Then I thought about it this year, but he had a major unexpected surgery in January that let me be an at-home nurse for 3 weeks... so I just don't think I could be gone from him for a whole month (even if he is fine and healthy). But if he could get a month off work in the summer, I'd jump on the opportunity like you have!!

Definitely remain excited about going! You are so lucky!! After my husband came out of surgery and was in the hospital recovering that first week, I would do things to help comfort him or naturally ease the pain - and the visual pictures I would create were thinking of a trip back to the ecotents, waking up hearing the waves crashing below, watching the sunrise on the secluded balcony, stopping in the road for the donkeys, snorkeling next to a sea turtle, etc. I am so envious of you!! 🙂
