I don't see much mention of renting motorcycles, my husband told me to ask about that. Of course he loves Harleys but I'm not the big fan but he thought it might be another way to see the island.

I wouldn't do it the roads are to narrow, driving on the wrong side with tourists on your side.

There are no Harley's or other motorcycles for rent on STT but there is a (only one I believe) scooter rental place. However, you only have to read through several threads on this and other forums on the subject to realize that they are NOT recommended as a means of transportation. There are no shoulders on the roads and the general terrain is very steep and winding. Motorist's visibility is reduced by driving LH drive vehicles on the left, thus making it very difficult to see scooters particularly when coming around corners. Frequent but very short showers make the roads slick and some of the potholes can swallow a scooter wheel. Don't take any chances - rent a car and be safe. Cheers!

You didn't mention which island. There are many scooter rental places on STT (most are near Havensight or Yacht Haven Grande), and it looks like the going rate is about $45/day.

There's also a Harley Davidson store on St Thomas, but they don't rent bikes - only arrange for purchase.

Some cruises do motorbike themed cruises, and let the travelers bring their bikes and do group riding tours around the island.

I think in the past year, I've seen/heard of two scooter accidents. One involved a tourist couple, and the other involved the owner/employee of one of the scooter businesses, and it was on flat ground. I see way more auto accidents than scooter accidents.

I don't believe there are "many" scooter rental places on STT. Most of the scooter accidents aren't reported (neither are most auto accidents) unless the injuries are very serious , traffic is tied up or the newspapers are short of something to report. I read about one of the two that you mentioned and personally saw four others in the past year just in my small area, along with several "near-misses." Speak to ER nurses for a different "official" perspective!

It's fun to watch the hogs drive by in their parade when those Harley ships come in. Those bikes are awesome monsters and quite a sight to see. Cheers!

If you wanna read about (or join) a Harley Cruise: Motorcycle Cruise.

On STT there are a few places that rent scooters. Biz Rentals (across from Wendy's) and Tropical Scooter (across from Havensight) are easy, and Biz also does 250 Enduros...in Crown Bay there is a rental place right on the corner,I can't remember it's name, but it's hard to miss....a guy I met from the moving board owns it...Kelly something....nice guy.

There is also one in between the two in Havensite making it three! The one in the middle rents those 3 wheel double things. There is also one in international Plaza and also by Discount Car Rental by the airport.

I stand corrected on the number of scooter rental places. There must be a breeding farm for them out in Bordeaux. Cheers!

I've said this before and I will say it again. We own a 50CC Honda and we drive it, or should I say my husband drives it around here all the time. We have some back roads and also some major roads here. It's even dangerous for us here and I would NEVER, as a tourist rent a moped or a motorcycle in STT.

Some of the hills and turns are killers and you can easily go off the road.

I just don't think it's worth it to take that chance on vacation. Either that or make sure you have some good medical coverage.

There have been scooter and cycle rentals here for at least 40 years. There are people who successfully rent them and have a good time. If you don't want to, or don't feel safe, don't do it. Simple. I have seen three spills and each time they were single vehicle accidents with the driver doing themselves in. Not one had to do with the island or roads or traffic.

Ron, you say that where the accidents you've personally seen are concerned, " Not one had to do with the island or roads or traffic."

There was a very nice young man working at the Texaco in Smith Bay and a year ago I saw him there again after what had been a long absence. We got chatting as he was filling up the car and he told me his scooter story. A friend of his had stopped by with a scooter and let him take it for a quick run just for the heck of it. At the top of Cassis Hill he hit a small pothole just the right way (obviously he was going very slowly as Cassis Hill is pretty steep!) and he came off the bike, it rolled over onto him and crushed his leg, breaking it in three places.

At the hospital one of the pin-repaired breakages developed an infection and he ended up staying there for over two months. He pulled up his pants leg to show me his leg and it was a horribly scarred sight. I asked him if he'd learned a lesson and he said yes, that he'd NEVER ride a scooter again.

I'm sure there are plenty of riders who manage to get by for a day without having an accident but vibound has obviously spoken to ER nurses as I have and heard enough tales to NOT recommend them as a safe means of transportation here. Visitors often leave their brains behind when they come here and I stay WAY back from those on scooters while driving - but many drivers don't and seeing those "near misses" is heart-thumping. Just my opinion but I'm sticking to it. Cheers!

I do not want to insult anyone here, but here goes - I have had a motorcycle accident and a scooter accident on STT. You have to be either insane or stupid to ride any sort of motorcycle on STT.

I will say that I was probably 80% stupid and 20% insane =)

I've been driving my bikes here for almost 11 years...only one accident in all that time, and it was the other guy's fault...This place is NOT for the novice rider, but those that are experienced will have no problems....and they'll save a ton of money on gas! My Honda gets 72 MPG here! The Harley only gets about 10!
