Hi All

We will be returning to the VI's in May with friends that have never been. We are spending our first night in St Thomas before moving over to St John. We'll be staying at Secret Harbour again and while we enjoyed the Blue Moon, we would like to take our friends to dinner somewhere that overlooks the twinkling lights of downtown and the harbour. We would like a great view but want good food as well. I have considered three restaurants - Room With a View, Banana Tree Grill and Mafolie. We have never been to these restaurants, but I'm leaning toward RWAV since it seems to get good reviews for both food and view and I like their menu. I would appreciate your comments or suggestions if there is something else that I haven't thought of?

Thanks!

Try Whale of a Tail in Red Hook for serious cooking and lovely harbor views! Shae has really stepped things up and his food is amazing - and not just seafood! Plus they serve "Happy Face" sorbet in between courses or for desert that's to die for!

You can't go wrong with your three choices! We loved Banana Tree Grille. We normally stay at Mafolie hotel, so would also recommend that one. Opinions are personal, so I know others might disagree with me, but here's mine: Mafolie has best view - better than Banana Tree Grille. Banana Tree wins on the food - although not by much. We have not been to RWAV, so I'm no help there.

To give your 1st Timers a treat - I'd do Mafolie. The view is simply incredible, and the quality of meal is solid.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Well I think I'm sold on Mafolie. I've seen some great night time photos and I like the menu. I also like that it seems more casual and I prefer to be in an open air restaurant. I'm the planner so it's up to me - I just have to make the right choice and Mafolie seems to be it!

Thanks all!

Tho I haven't been to Mafolie in years, the view is EXCELLENT! Wish I could speak for the food, but can't. I believe you making a great choice, especially coming from RonUSVI. He knows!
Would love for you to let us know on this thread, once you get back, of what you think!

The Mafolie View

The food is just as good. We have stayed there and eaten there several times. We had dinner there the weekend before last with some friends that were in from the states.

Captain Jay, in my searching I saw some of your earlier pictures. They look amazing! I have decided we will eat at Mafolie! I'm sure that our friends will be "gobsmacked"!v;) Sherri, I will definitely report back here after our trip.

Thanks,

Karen

I haven't been to either Banana Tree Grille or Room with a View as yet, but it looks like they're both located at Bluebeard's Castle. Do I understand that correctly? Is one more a formal restaurant and the other more a pub?

BBuffett Guy,
Both are considered fine dining, BUT a Room with a View is finer. RWAV is enclosed and has A/C and BTG is open air, just over the pool. Usually, my first choice is BTG. I went for a meeting at RWAV a few months back and we were treated like royalty! Everything was excellent! BUT, I have to say, when I get reviews from my guests (in our guest book), I get mixed reviews!

Thanks Sherri. Banana Tree Grille sounds like a keeper. I love Herve's and Agave, but needed a third dinner spot for an upcoming 3 night stay on St. Thomas.

I love Indigo but it is a stretch to say that it overlooks Magens Bay...perhaps in the daytime you can see a pinch of the bay but actually it overlooks Magens Point Resort pool! The food, however, is terrific and the mojitos kill!!!!

Love the view from Mafolie but haven't been back for a few years since they charged $75 (market price) for 1/2 a lobster in rum cream sauce...outrageous and the shell fish appys were warm not iced. Go for the view but eat at Banana Tree is my recommendation.

Tom B,
My FAVORITE restaurant was not asked for! I am with you on Indigo!!!!!! I just found out some very sad news tho. The owners have sold the restaurant and will be out of there the end of March- new owners taking over! We can only HOPE that the food can compare. The good news is, the original owners will be going away for about 6 months and then will re-open a place!!!! They didn't like being tied into having lunch and dinner 7 days a week. EXHAUSTING to say the least! I am already anticipating their return!

The folks from Old Stone Farmhouse are the new owners of Indigo and everyone is hoping they won't change TOO much. Cheers!

If the people from the Old Stone are taking over Indigo, I am sure it will be terrific...hopefully not as pricey as the Old Stone. I love the beauty of the Old Stone Farmhouse and eat there on occasion. The food is terrific, I love the duck! I will be in STT for March and will post a trip report here. I will be trying the new breakfast/brunch at the Old Stone since I loved loved loved it during it's previous short run.
