My husband and I are planning a trip for March 6th thru the 13th. We have been to the Caribbean by way of a cruise in 2003 and wanted to actually spend time at one of the islands. We are looking into staying on STT tho we also loved STJ when we were there. We are able to find hotels available for St Thomas but it seems that St John is booked for that week. Are there fewer hotels in STJ than STT or is STJ that much more popular? All we seem to find for STJ are Villas or condos.
We are currently looking into Wyndham Sugar Bay on STT.
We are both 50 tho to know us you would agree with our philosophy, we are 25 with 25 years experience. 🙂 Any help on the best place to stay while there, or even a hotel available on STJ would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked in to Estate Lindholm? For a short stay like 4 days I'd recommend it. Rent a car and have fun. You'll be back and probably rent a villa when you make that 2nd trip.

while never stayed at lindholm, diana's comments warrant consideration. if you are are 25/25, try 3 nites at beach resort of your choice on stt then move to stj for 3-4 nites with a jeep. unless you like pampering, food service and amenties of resort hotels (my bride of 39+ yrs and i like that occasionally), your next trip to islands will be beeline to stj. If you like natural beauty, beaches, water and interior, you won't get bored.

our 1st trip to stj in oct 04 was at a west facing villa on stj. wasted several evenings dining out until one day we returned from all day trip to Mahoo (bride reading on beach within underhanded stones throw to car and me snorkeling east side around to francis bay) to see the beginning of the most awesome sunset and lighting of stt in distance. been back 4 times since, stayed in 4 different villas with stt/sunset views. except for usual 1 night dining out (with limited ahcohol intake due to drive home), our evening meals are now on deck with a view, me grilling and cleaning up, bride preparing salads/pasta and we both have all the vino we want w/o worry of safe trip to br. never priced it, but trip probably cheaper than years self pay for viagra and works for wife too!

our only draw back to stj trips with villa accoms, is due the bride's developing fear of cars few yrs ago. she had to learn to ride in back seat and keep her eyes closed on drives until she can tell we are stopped or on as straight-away (few/far between).

i hope you and others following this board (wish i'd found before first 3 trips, cause there is invaluable info to be mined here), find your own paradise, we sure did on stj.

You can try Gallows Point. A bit pricey for that week (it is still the high season) but perhaps it will give you a few days on STJ. More than enough to intoxicate 😀

Don't know about availability at that time (it's the busy time ), but you could look into these:

They're small inns right in Cruz Bay.

to answer your question, there ARE far fewer hotels on St. John for two reasons. #1 reason is that St. John is far smaller than either St. Thomas or St. Croix. Reason #2 is that some 2/3 of the island of St. John is owned by the Virgin Islands National Park, and development within the park is VERY limited.

Definitely call Lauren at Estate Lindholm - I hope they have availability for you - we were there for five days in December and loved it, would go back in a heartbeat! Check out their website for more information. Have a great trip - you are going to be hooked on St.John!

Have you considered renting a house or cottage? Might be some available still. Check out the ads in Caribbean Travel & Life. They have a ton or rental listings.
