I've finally completed arranging for my trip to St. Thomas and St. John in June. I'm sure that I should enjoy the process of finding the "right" place, but it can sure be a challenge. We'll be staying at Secret Harbour on St. Thomas for 3 days, and the Blue Palm villa in Coral Bay on St. John for 7 days. As always, the messages on this forum were a big help.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a day sail on St. John, where I would be allowed to help with the helm and sheets? My sailing skills aren't good enough for a bareboat charter, but I'd like to do more than just drink rum punch and watch the scenery (though that sounds pretty good too).

Thanks!

We liked Rick and Robin Gallup with the Long Distance:

It sails out of Coral Bay, which is really nice when staying in Coral Bay. Both Rick and Rob are very nice - he is the captain and she snorkels with you. I imagine they'd let you help with the sailing, but can't say for sure to what extent.

Have a great trip!

The racing excursion, On Deck Racing, has a sign at their HQ in Havensight at Port of Sale that says "Free Sailing Lessons." I know that if you take that excursion, you do participate in operating the vessel. I don't know if that's what they're calling their "Free Sailing Lessons" or what, but it's worth an inquiry.

Hello Boston Buffett Guy,

Sail Safaris on St. John offers sailing lessons and also does daytrips; so they may be able to offer what you have in mind. http://www.sailsafaris.net/. Also Survivan mentions allowing guests to take a turn at the helm; http://www.stjohnyachtcharters.com.

For St. Thomas check out the Learn to Sail page.

Thanks for the tips everyone...

I had actually booked a trip to JVD on Survivan on my last visit to St. John, but the trip was cancelled when a tropical storm swept through the area. I drowned my sorrows with a couple of Painkillers at Skinny Legs. Anyone out there have any experience with Survivan?
