We are thinking about renting a car in STT once we arrive next week. We will have to park the car all day on two different occassions at Red Hook. Is this possible? Cost? Just trying to decide if renting the car will be worth the money, or maybe we should just stick it out and take a taxi. Anyone have any advice?

Some parking available in Red Hook for free, but you need to be shopping locally. AYH parking is free if you get there early and evade the parking police. I tink the cost at the ferry dock is about $10 for the day.

One tip on the shopping parking spots... for example the Red Hook Shopping Center. Don't parked there if you aren't actually shopping/dining there, the security people are usually keeping an eye out. They will boot your tire if they determine you aren't actually a customer and then you have to pay a fine to get the boot taken off.

SailingtheVI - do you know whether there is a parking fee at AYH. I always thought if you were a customer going to one of the businesses located there that you were fine, but I was recently told that there is a $12 (for the day) fee to park there?

The parking lot by the ferry is $10 a day.

When you say you are going to park all day, I assume you are goping to St John, yes? Then, I definitely can vouch for the advice about Red Hook Plaza (where Duffy's, Chelsea Drugstore and other businesses are.) I was once booted and had to come up with $100 cash to get the car out of jail! Kinda tough when you don't have a car to go get the money. 😮

There is also paid parking at Mencia's, up the hill behind Marina Market. They are nice people, too! (tu)

I would strongly recommend you pay the $10. for all day at either the Ferry terminal if you can get a spot or at Mencia's which is up the hill past the Marina Market. (same driveway). Mencia's (not sure on spelling) runs a shuttle to the ferry terminal. Terminal lot is best, convenience wise, but often full. Get there early and run through the Ferry terminal drive through and if no spots in the lot head up to Mencia's. They always have a spot somewhere.

Rent. You will probably spend more on taxi's just going to and from the ferry. Plus you will miss two more chances to drive on the left. 😎
