I am leaving from seattle to USVI, I have been told that a us birth certificate will be fine, that I wont need a passport,,,, as I still am trying to get one but I dont know for sure I can get one in this short of time.. we leave on the 23rd of June ... and there are a few online sites that say they can expidite it that quickly, but I was wondering about the British Islands, or St. Maartin, if a U.S. Birth Cet. would sufice there???
Thank You!!!

This information is actually available on this forum under "visitor information" at the top of this page, but basically you will need on LEAVING the US Virgin Islands to go back to the mainland "a certified copy of a birth certificate and government issued photo identification like a driver's license."

Until the beginning of 2007 the same applies for entry into and out of the British Virgin Islands. After January 2007 you will need a passport.

You definitely have to have a passport to get into St. Maarten.

Hope this helps.

I would think that you would have to have your original birth certificate or a state copy.

I would much rather take my passport which is good for 7 years, before I go looking for my birth certificate everytime I go away.

In fact, I intend to get another passport as soon as this one is up.

Does this mean that a driver's license alone is not sufficient?

Although I have heard people getting through with only a license, I would not try it...especially since 9/11. In fact, I believe a passport will be required in 2007 and just BC with picture ID won't cut it.

According to the State Department, to enter the Netherlands Antilles you will need:

Either a valid U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate (original or certified copy) accompanied by a valid photo identification must be presented. While a U.S. passport is not mandatory, it is recommended since it is a more readily recognized form of positive proof of citizenship. Tourists may be asked to show onward/return tickets or proof of sufficient funds for their stay. Length of stay is granted for two weeks and may be extended for 90 days by the head office of immigration.

No need a birth certificate(raised seal) not a copy of yours. Or a passport. The first in front of me in Customs only had drivers licence didn't get through taken to a room. I guess he had to call home to get a birth certificate faxed. In fact Custom person asked if anyone else just had driver's licence step out of line & follow this person. JMHO
