My brother and I are in our early 50's, and will be taking a cruise mid-May. We aren't swimmer or shoppers, but are interested in history, so one of the places we'd like to see is 99 steps, Blackbeard's Castle, etc. I've also heard something about an old Lutheran church on the island, and since we are Lutherans, would be interested in seeing this church. Is it a "safe" walk from Havensight, where I believe Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas will be docking, to town? If so, about how long does it take, and is there a visitor's center at the dock where we could get directions? I've looked through the first four (4) pages of this website, but really only found info if you are staying on the island, where to drink or eat? We just have about eight (8) hours if that, and want to make good use of our time. If anybody has other suggestions, we'd sure appreciate them.

We have cruised to STT several times. There are taxi's right at the docks. We took a taxi and he gave us a tour of the island. He dropped us off where we wanted and picked us back up. Several people said the were surprised that he came back for us, but we did not have any problems We paid $25.00 per person, there were 6 in our group and it was our favorite day of the whole cruise! On RCC you will pay $49 just to go to skyline drive. Most cruise lines will suggest you don't take the taxi's, but that's because they are losing money when you do. Here's his name and number in case you would want to call him before you go and make plans-
Patrick's sightseeing Tours and More---- 340-474-0711. He was so nice to our family, I don't feel you could go wrong with him. Good luck and have fun!

I would not take the long walk from Havensight into Town. The taxi is well worth the fare since it is a long hot walk on what can be a very warm humid day. Save your energy for the sights to see!

Bobo: The taxi drivers will hustle you to ride. They will tell you that it is several miles, however, it is only one mile from Wendy's to the Coast Guard dock, all flat. It can get warm, but if you are in reasonably good shape, it is a nice walk along the water. The Frederick Lutheran Church is on Norre Gade, which is the same as Main Street. There are quite a few historic buildings downtown. The Synagogue, the Anglican cathedral, Government House, Seven Arches Museum are all interesting. My recommendation for lunch downtown is Cuzzin's. You can sample local food in air-conditioned comfort! And if you chicken out about trying souse, they make a great cheeseburger. 😉

You'll be climbing a hill going to Blackbeard's so ask for a taxi to drop you off there, then you can see that, wander downtown & walk back to the ship if you don't want to ride.

If you don't want to eat at Cuzzin's, ask anyone downtown for directions to Gladys'. Also good food there in one of the historic alleyways between Main St. & the Waterfront.

You won't have any problem walking from the docks to Havensight. From there, just walk along the water from Havensight to get into Charlotte Amalie's other shopping district. That should take about 10 or 15 minutes. The 99 steps to Blackbeard are behind the park right before the shops start. You can't miss them.
Have fun!
