Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good day or half-day snorkel trips. We're not looking to spend very much, and we don't need a luxury day sail or anything. We're just looking for a way to get out to less visited spots and explore around a bit.

Any help, websites, or info would be much appreciated.

Also, any other places to visit for a honeymoon in St. Thomas coming up in a week?

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,
To be honest, unless your time is very limited, I would forgo hiring someone to take you on a trip. Save the money. I spent three weeks on STX and the snorkeling was excellent everywhere I went. Just find some rocky bottom close to the beach and go for it. I would strongly suggest investing in a pair of water shoes to protect yourself from all the sea urchins as well as having someone show you what fire coral looks like so you can avoid it. I don't know about STJ or STT, but since they all came from the same volcanic mass, they should be just as good as STX. I WOULD suggest, however, a scuba trip if its in your budget!

I'd normally love to go on a scuba trip, but don't you have to be certified to do that? I've never done that before, but always wanted to. I saw some prices for it, and it seemed reasonable ... but it looks like you have to be certified, which costs a couple hundred it looks like? Correct me if I'm wrong ... I'm really kind of clueless with all that.

Thanks,

Brian

Hello Brian,

You can do an intro dive. Try Collette at 6paq http://www.6paqscuba.com on St. John. She takes small groups, couples, individuals out and gives them a brief introduction and then takes them out around a reef, sticking with them closeby to make sure all is fine. She is very good! Other dive operators also offer intro packages, so it is an option for you!

Scroll to the top of this page and click on St. Thomas and then Daysails; you will find a good selection there, with website links so you can check them out. You said you aren't looking to spend very much - what budget are you looking at. They are typically around $85-$120 a person and if you go with a 6 person max charter and charter it privately (just the two of you) you'll be paying more like $500-$600 for the day.

How about renting a boat, any experience? You could also rent a dinghy and stay closer to the coast that way, and explore beaches.

My wife and I paid $250 for the both of us with SCUBA in Christianstead on STX. The price included pool training time and then a two-tank dive for the each of us. Very much worth it and Ian, our scuba teacher was great.

I would recommend Captain Nautica for a half day trip. They take you to 2 sites which are very good. We tried Coki beach on our own and was a little disappointed.
