We will be going to STJ on Friday morning. We, however have a layover in San Juan Airport from 1:30 AM to 8:30 AM. What kind of airport is this to hang out in or do you reccomend a short stay at a local hotel? If it is a hotel, what do you reccomend. We will be leaving for that direction tomorrow morning (6-22).

Thanks for your help!
Larry

Hi Larry,

There is a Best Western right onsite at the SJU airport and it is VERY convenient. The hotel is about 100 feet (or less) from the American Airlines terminal. It an older hotel and the rooms are small and modestly appointed, but they are updated and clean. The hotel also offers a free continental breakfast.

We happened to be flying on AA to STT on an early morning flight (6:45 A.M.). We got up early and walked over to the terminal, checked in, checked our bags, and then returned to the hotel for our breakfast. It worked out really well for us.

We got a room on a AAA rate for $144 (plus tax), which is a bit spendy IMHO for a few hours stay. That said, by the time we got to SJU all the way from New Mexico, we felt that it was money well spent to have a hot shower and few hours of sleep in a nice soft bed.

If you can fly Delta it goes direct from Atlanta to St. Thomas, bypassing San Juan completely.

We have also stayed in the Best Western and were very satisifed with the experience. I would opt for it rather than a night in a small, vacant airport.

As a spendthrift and old time backpacker,I'd spend the night in the airport. Youll get very few hours of sleep anyway and it can be an adventure. You'd have 60 to 200 more bucks to spend on rum instead of a room for a short night. Just a thought.

the airport is very safe and security is good - the recent expansion is pretty cool. I must be cheap, cos I would definitely crash at the airport and save the bucks!
