Hi,

Staying on STJ for a week in August. It looks like it's cheaper to rent on STT (at the airport), but am having trouble finding a company that will allow us to take a car over on the abrge. Who can we use? And, if we arrive at 3:00PM, are we just cutting it too close to catch the car barge from Red Hook? I know they don't run as late as the passenger ferry and are a little funny with their schedules.

Thanks!

Hello Rob,

The rental car is cheaper on St. Thomas or are you figuring taxi and passenger ferry is being saved by renting on St. Thomas? There was a recent thread discussing this. Its an ok idea but keep in mind that since your rental agency will be on St. Thomas should anything happen like locking your keys in the car, losing the keys, a fender bender, flat tire you are looking at a big headache to get the agents on St. Thomas to come over to St. John to help you and perhaps they might even tell you come to St. Thomas and get the service you need yourself since thats where their office is. A perk mentioned in the other discussion by some St. John visitors is that the agencies in Cruz Bay will allow their customers to park their rental car in the agency parking lot - doesn't seem like a big deal until you take into consideration that Cruz Bay has very little parking so is nice to know you have somewhere to park without the headache of driving in circles looking. As for the time you arrive, there are several afternoon car barges (5pm, 6pm, 6:30pm, 7:15pm). Have you asked Budget about taking the car over? Consider the options and determine whether the savings is worth what could be a headache if you needed customer service.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the response. It makes a lot of sense, what you said about flat tires and all, and the parking.

I think we'll rent on STJ. Sounds easier by far.

Thanks!
