A woman who just came back from STT wrote about her trip in the newspaper. She mentions several "good eats," most of which I have already learned about from this forum (Indigo, Duffy's- lobster night, Greenhouse, Cuzzins, etc) but she mentions North Drop, Gumpa's (for breakfast) and Deanos which I have never seen mentioned. Does anyone have anything to say about these restaurants?

Also, how far in advance can you plan around cruise ships? If we want to do a day sail when there are 5-6 ships in town (to avoid the crowds), can I plan that now? (for April 2007)

One more thing - last week I looked at car rentals on hotwire and could get a full size for $20.95/day. Now a week later its $24.95. I am considering a midsize car if there is enough room for 4 people's luggage at $22.95/day. So, will the prices continue to rise the closer we get to vacation time, or does hotwire prices fluctuate? Also, should we go ahead and pay the extra for a bigger car? I mean, its only $2/day split between 2 couples so its nothing. I am more worried that every week the price is going to increase $5/day. I think a smaller car would be easier to drive and park, but I'm afraid we'll have luggage piled up on us getting to the hotel!

thanks to everyone! and I'm still looking for a pic to post on the other thread!

Hey Mountaineer Girl,

I have written about North Drop. Yummmm! It is a favorite of mine and my family. It was closed on our last visit (Aug/Sept 06) and we were bummed! We even made a special trip to that area and Sherri (from the forum) called for us and found it to be closed). It has indoor and al fresco dining..with a to-die-for sunset view and tiki-torches along the rail overlooking Hull Bay.

The food is exceptional! This is normally our "welcome dinner" - first night on island since we tend to stay in the Magens Bay area.

I am not easily impressed. STT/STJ restaurants are usually a snore, IMO. NorthDrop draws me back! Search my 2005 trip report for a review. We also visited in 2004 and when it was New Bryan's Bar (2003?) - not sure if I reviewed.

Re: Hotwire: They will fluctuate. Sometimes, taking a day off will reduce the price. I have not found that it will continue to rise. I bet that he $24 will stay the same. Play with the dates. By the way....the smallest car (economy?) is larger than the next largest car! I rented the smallest/cheapest car and my parents rented the largr car / more expensive. Mine was larger!!! Go with the cheapest car!

thanks so much! I'll have to put North Drop down as a must-do. And since you've raved about Indigo I want to go there also. So many restaurants, so little time! You see where are priorites lie heehee!

Now, are you saying that the compact will have more room than the mid-size? It says on their website that a compact is like chevy cobalt, mid-size is like a Toyota Corolla, and large is a Ford Taurus (?) or chevy Impala. There is a $5 difference from the compact to the largest, which split in half isn't that bad. I was thinking of going with the midsize, but I don't know. We will only need the space when going to and from the airport with all the luggage.

MG-

I rented a compact (the smallest) and got a Suzuki Aerio - and I an not kidding - it was MUCH larger in the trunk that the $5 more Chevy Caviller (sp?) that ,my parents had over the same 2 wk period. So much so that when we went to the beach and had to haul beach gear (chairs, etc), everyone insisted that I take the Aerio. I never told my parents that I paid less for mine - didn't want them to feel cheated since they kept raving about how mine was larger.

P.S.. I have rented through hotwire on one prior occasion and thru Avis the year prior when I rented a compact - I got an Aerio all three times. It is a great car - CD player, good trans, large trunk and all.

thanks again, compact it is! for $20/day, can't beat that. It'll be easier to drive and park also, not that I'm doing any of that! My girlfriend's husband doesn't drink - so he's the DD!!

MG: Bumpa's is a great spot for breakfast and lunch downtown. They make the best veggie burgers!

You will have to wait a little to find out the cruise ship schedule. I don't think they have put out the general one for season. What part of April are you coming? Many ships reposition the end of April.

Blu - here's the link. Well, you'll have to copy and paste because I haven't figured out how to post a link. I'm not very computer savvy.

I hope you won't have to register to read it, but its free if you do. You'll just get e-mails from a Charleston WV newspaper!

Some ships go to the Med or Alaska in the summer, so they leave, usually the end of April. You will be here as Carnival is cranking up. Carnival Village opens that Monday, Wednesday should be Food Fair. You will miss the parades on Friday and Saturday, however.

Oh bummer! I would've loved to see the parades! But Food Fair sounds neat.
