Looking for reviews about the Serendip Condos in St. John. Has anyone stayed there before? How far from town (Cruz Bay) is it? We are scheduled to be in STJ mid to late February and planning on staying at the Serendip in one of their Studio Apartments. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated from anyone who has stayed there and also from the residents of the island.

Isa,

Serendip is only a few minutes drive from Cruz Bay where you will arrive by ferry. It's located in a nice, quiet residential neighborhood. The condos are located at the top of a steep hill the locals call Jacob's Ladder. They are not new by any means but are clean and well maintained. They are not at all fancy but have all the basics.

Thanks bjh. You mentioned it is only a few minutes "drive" to Cruz Bay. How far of a walk is it? I am not renting a car. I'd rather take taxis and walk around. Also, I just heard there is a lot of construction in that direct area. New condominiums going up. How bad is it?

Isa,

It is within walking distance if you are in good shape as there is a really steep hill "Jacob's Ladder". The hill can also be very slippery after a rain. There are no sidewalks and it could be dangerous, especially after dark. During the day you could walk into Cruz Bay (all down hill) and take a taxi back. Just a suggestion you may want to consider. I am sure you could make the walk in less than a half hour, and that would be at a moderate walking pace.
There is construction near the area an ugly condo fiasco development called Sirenusa. Big construction trucks on the narrow roads are another reason to be very careful when walking. It has been quiet lately so I do not know what is up with the construction project. There has been one problem after another since the beginning.

Thanks again bjh. You have been extremely helpful. Sounds like too far of a walk to town for me. Especially the hill (Jacob's Ladder). I've located another place and want to know your opinion. Mahony Tree Villas. They have a studio apartment, the Azul de Mar. Any comments about this place? Seems to be a lot closer to town and just a few steps away from Frank Bay. What's your thoughts?

lsa,

You cannot go wrong with either Mahogany Tree Villas or Azul de Mar. They are both in easy walking distance of Cruz Bay.
I have listed some other options for you. These are also within walking distance. Samuel's cottages would also be a walk up hill but not as bad a Jacobs Ladder.
