We are renting a mid-size car at STT and bringing it over on the ferry. Will we be able to use most roads on the island?

You should have no problem on the main roads. Are you staying on St. John? If you are, and are staying in a villa, you might want to ask the rental company about the roads to the villa. Sometimes those roads and driveways can be brutal. 4WD is always a plus on St. John, but you can manage without it. When it rains, some of the switchbacks on the main roads get really slick and you have to know what you are doing to get up them.

As long as you didn't rent from Hertz, you're fine. Most of the roads on St John are MUCH better maintained than STT and very few require 4WD unless you're going off the beaten path to further places like Lamesure or one of the more remote bays.

I'm with Julie on this one. Although a 2WD is OK for day trippers going to STJ from STT, it's always best to check with the villa rental agency on STJ as far as the necessity of 4WD is concerned. Hertz doesn't allow their vehicles to go to STJ period but, for instance, Discount allows but requires rental of a 4WD from them for those staying on STJ. As Julie says, those switchbacks after a little rain can get very slick!
