Visiting STT again in July--Is the Road to Latitude 18 paved yet. The last time we were their with our rent a car it took some beating with the bumps. When we went to turn it in, the company( Dependable) gave us a hard time. Thanks

Thanks.--They should have a little Ferry from Red Hook over to Latitude 18--It would save a lot of shock absorbers.

How long ago were you here? Several new sections of the road have been paved in the last 18 months or so but the last stretch is pretty much the same. You shouldn't have any problems if you take it SLOWLY!

The road is certainly an adventure but I guess that is part of the charm. I took my very small rental car down to Latitude 18 and never really had any problems with either the road or the rental agency. I simply made sure I drove very slowly and was very selective as which hole I was driving into.

STT:

I was there January through April (2010).....we go to Latitude 18, often......even though some of the front road sections are "paved" the last stretch is as rough as it has always been....

This will be our 8th trip to STT and the last time was two yrs ago. We do try to avoid the craters but sometimes late at night it can be hard. But what the heck you just got to be careful. A water taxi would be nice even though we stay at Secret Harbor. Thanks alot for the Info.--Bill

They are still trying to get some money to pave the road. But it is about the same as it was a year or so ago. They did bring in a little stone by the end to help with the sharp rocks.

But it is a challenge.

But it is worth the trip. And when the fiddler is there it is packed to the limit.

Ah, the the Fiddler is gone now till next season, but Lat 18 is still charming anytime of the year. As mentioned many times - key to the road, take it S L O W.

Ah, I remember that trecherous trek well. It's been 8 long years since I moved back to the USA from my beloved St. Thomas. When I visited 3 years ago, I made sure to take that precarious passage during my stay. I had (once again) a fabulous evening and even bumped into friends I hadn't seen in many moons who had also navigated the moons surface for the sake of nostalgia. Geez, writing about it makes me want to go jump on a plane and return. Anybody else out there reading this who longs to return to the USVI permanently? Anybody remember me? I drive that road every day to work. You just have to look for the sweet spots and drive slowly. Driving slow gives you time to miss the iguanas in the road and to watch the deer in Eastwind's yard. There are a couple of new fawns that run up to my car like puppys.

I just checked with the boss and The Fiddler is still on track to return in January. He talked last season about making this past one his last. It was year number 30. But as of today he's still coming back.

you can always check -------- Dick Solberg ----- www.sunmountainfiddler.com for the bands schedule - I have caught him in the States a few times and it is fun to see him off island.

I just got the Summer schedule from Dick and he says he is coming back here next winter -- he is playing a midwest tour this summer and also going to Norway and Ireland!

Mighty Whitey is very sick and cannot perform anymore. Barefoot Davis is hosting open mic night on Thursdays now. Still a full music schedule until July or August. As long as everyone keeps coming, we'll keep playing music!
