I've never seen a spider in my home, though we have LOTS of lizards and mosquitoes in the house. I took a picture of a pretty scary spider I saw the other day on a bush, but that's the only time I'd seen such a spider. You'll probably never see any.

Not sure where you're moving to in the USVI however we were in St. John for 2 weeks (4 days of that in St. Thomas) and aside from the Iguana's at a beachside bar, the HUGE black bumblebees sucking on nectar at the villa, and the amazingly cute lizards doing pushups each time they stopped moving we never saw a spider. People mentioned noseeums and mosquitos and we never got a single bite nor did we see any of them, I was quite amazed after all we read about noseeums and mosquitos that we didn't encounter ANY. If there are scary island spiders it must be that they are scared of us because we never saw any. Hope this helps!

I have been to St. John 4 times (going again on 3/25) and have never seen a spider. I see lizards and normally would be afraid, but they are part of the environment there and I think they're really cute. As far as mosquitoes go, the only time I got bit quite a few times was when I was there in December. It was still worth it!

We had been traveling to STJ for many years before we encountered any 'scarey' but I have seen some pretty big spiders including the very large brown tarantlas we found in a villa we rented up on Bordeaux Mountain. We've also come across small scorpions on the island. You're in the tropics so you have to expect critters. Those geckos and iguanas are your friends so when you find them in the house, that's a 'good thing'.

I always shake out my clothes and shoes and inspect the bed before crawling in each night just to be on the safe side.

Don't let the critters spoil your trip.

Yes there are spiders on the island, amny different ones and many different sizes. They will not bother you if you leave them alone. You always want to check your shoes in the morning, and it is a good idea to shake your clothes if they have been laying.

Most of them perform a valuable function on the island.

In regards to the issue of snakes, there are none the Mongoose have eaten all of them. I have never seen a snake on St. John in almost 30 years of traveling there.
