Check out Beach Scooter Rentals 340 693 7368. I'm sure they'll have all the answers you need. Not sure but sounds like a new company. They used to have cute yellow scooters and cute yellow helmets. I think they are so bright so that if you get squished all over the road they'll be able to see you better.

Make sure your medical insurance is up to date. When one of those cement trucks come around one of those blind curves you are taking your life in your hands and if anything happens you might want the medicos to have easy access to that card. Medical evacuation insurance is good to have also because unless things have changed there is still no neuro surgeon specialty on St Thomas.

This is very dangerous. Think twice about playing this dangerous game, especially if you have people back home who love you or depend on you.

Although they always do look cute trying to get up some of the steep hills.

Promo...funny you should mention the cement trucks.

We had 2 jeeps...The parents were always the lead car and the 5 twenty-somethings were following us. We were going around the corner and up a big hill when a cement truck was coming down. He skidded and hit the rock wall beside him..I swore that he was going to fall over on top of us. This is while our children in the car behind us were watching it happen. Pretty scarey moment.

I have a 50cc Honda here at home and every time I saw one of the scooters I said a prayer for them. I don't believe that STJ or STT is a place for anybody to rent scooters. It's just too dangerous with the roads and the hills. I would never rent them.

They used to have a saying on St John about the folks who rent scooters . " Dont worry-they won't last too long--if the tourists don't get 'em the taxi's will".
Very very bad move--scooters and St John don't mix.

i am very aware of the dangers involved having been to the st. john before and sitting as a passenger in a jeep. as i said its just for popping down to star market to get groceries rather than jaunts through the hills and to the beaches. my insurance is up to date and covers every eventuality so if it comes to 'scraping me and my easy to spot yellow helmet' off the road (thanks for that) it'll be covered...

i have ridden scooters around some of the tiniest windiest backroads in thailand and south and central america (not to mention the pothole riddled country single laned roads here in ireland) with buses, trucks and various other classes of vehicle vying for supremecy and i know my limits. as i said, just need something to nip to the shops on.

ccd,

If you are willing to risk it, there used to be a place in the Old Lumberyard in Cruz Bay called Scooters in Paradise. I don't know if they are still there or not. You can also check out the website for Biz Scooters on STT, they can probably put you in touch with a rental source if they can't help, www.scootervi.biz.

ccd,

The medical evacuation insurance promoguy mentioned is a separate policy from your traditional medical insurance that covers helicopter transportation to Puerto Rico should the need arise. It's expensive, more than what you save by renting a scooter rather than a car, but if you're committed to using a scooter, it's worth it. Also be sure to carry an organ donor card, just in case, as there are many people waiting for organs and young adults who believe that handiness trumps safety and harm only happens to other people tend to make the very best organ donor candidates.

I think the scooters cost the same as a car. How old are you? There are some agencies that will rent to you if you are a certain age and they charge an extra daily fee. Just a thought. A Jeep's the way to go to STJ.

Last I recall scooter rental was $50 a day on STT. A subcompact car was in the ballpark of $20 a day. Go figure! You said you were under the age of 25. Most, if not all, of the bigger rental agencies do not rent to your age group. Why not try one of the local STJ rental agencies and see what they say? They might do it for an extra "premium".

Budget rental car on STT does rent to people under 25. I believe it's an extra $10.00 a day and you can take the car over to STJ.

i'm 23 and even but whether any of the rental places would rent me a car at this age is beyond the point as i can't drive! have gotten from a to b over here by moped/scooter since age 17! i will get around to doing the test and getting my license one of these days.....hmm.....

dntw8up: my own personal insurance covers me for any ailment, whether at home or abroad, you can think of and there is a section in my travel insurance that covers instances that require evacuation by air to medical facilities...it's what i've used in five years of travels and has covered my a$$ on one or two occassions down through the years. i do carry an organ donor card but i found your comment that -'young adults who believe that handiness trumps safety and harm only happens to other people tend to make the very best organ donor candidates' both insulting and condescending! i never once have put my own personal safety,or that of anyone else, aside for the sake of convenience or to save a bit of money.

thanks to all for your help and suggestions!

ccd,

I'm sorry you interpreted my remark as insulting and condescending. I was simply stating a fact ; healthy young adults are the ideal demographic for organ donation.

In your first post on this thread you said, "...i'm under25 and so couln't rent a car..." but after several posters suggest that for an extra fee there are companies that will rent to young adults, you admit that the real reason you can't rent a car is because you can't drive! Please don't interpret my next remark, which is also a fact, as insulting and condescending, but in the USVI a valid driver's license is required to operate a scooter.

Hey Blu.

A valid driver's license is required for driving in the USVI but I don't believe it has to be a U.S. license. Most U.S. vehicle rental companies honor valid driver's licenses from other countries. Some other countries don't honor U.S. licenses but will honor an international driver's license which AAA can issue its members.

i post on here when i'm in work and have a few spare (sneaky!) seconds...my original post was was just a quickie to put the feelers out...i am travelling with people who have full car licenses but are also under 25 but to cut down on going into detail i just asked on behalf of myself...

i also feel i must apologise for snapping at you re: donor card post....bad day at the office+freezing cold rainy weather here+time seeming to run backwards rather than speeding forward to departure date = unreasonably cranky me. now it's a friday and a long bank holiday weekend (and even kinda sunny!) rational me back so apologies again and should our paths cross on island (i can't tell from your posts whether you are living there or not?) i'll be sure to get a round in!
