We (4 of us adults) will be in St. Thomas on Mar 14 2006 from the MS Zuiderdam. I would like opin ions on the best excusions to take. We are all over 50 and I am not able to walk very far due to a knee injury.

David 429:

I concur with dnt8up's question. There are numerous excursions offered on-board and many of them should fit your bill.

I would suggest an island tour for a start. Several of the taxis offer an overview sland tour.

If you'd like to get a little more adventurous then do a snorkel trip. I recommend Captain Nautica. The last time I was on their local excursion a couple of months ago with a visiting friend, there was a wonderful passenger who, because of disabilities couldn't get off and onto the boat without major assistance. What a champ he was but the staff on the boat (and some of us passengers) all rallied around to help him get in and out of the boat and he had the very best time. He snorkelled with the turtles and was so very happy!

Atlantis Submarine is great too. They take you down around Buck Island (right off STT) on the sub after a short but super trip from the WICO dock on their well-equipped and comfortable boat. During the outbound trip you get to see a great view of the South side of the island, then you disembark and easily board the sub which, once you're seated. gradually takes you down and you see the wonder of the ocean life right in front of you through the portals.

Hope this helps!

On one of our trips to St. Thomas, we took a taxi from the cruise ship dock to downtown Charlotte Amalie. We walked one short block over to the street that runs parallel to the main street and there are lots of taxis looking for business. We looked for a taxi van that was clean and air conditioned and asked the driver what he would charge to give us a tour of the island. There were 6 of us but I really don't remember what he charged. I'm thinking twenty dollars a couple. He took us to several of the overlooks for pictures, gave us history of the island and the trees as well as up to Mountaintop (a must stop) which overlooks Magen's Bay. It was a great experience. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the input. I am looking forward to the trip.
I don't know what excursions Zuiderdam is offering but I'll look into it.

David,

The Atlantis submarine is a good low-mobility option but you would need to be able to climb up and down a ladder to enter and exit the submarine. Your cruise documents will include shore excursion information and Holland America is especially good about noting the necessary fitness level to participate in each excursion.

Then there's the BOB boat - those underwater scooters. I'm not sure what ships they have contracts with, but it is also VERY well run & good for someone with your limited mobility.

I'd not suggest Captain Nautica for that very reason - they have RIBs....rigid inflatables. There are many better choices....any of the catamarans will have a ladder to get out of the water by....Doublooon (although a fav with ME, being the pirate I am) would also not be a good choice. Castaway Girl or Castaway Girl II....or any number of the 6-pack boats would well fit your needs.

Happy snorkeling!
