I'm in extreme planning mode :

How do you get around on JVD? Is everything within walking distance?

If taxi's are necessary - can anyone tell me the cost of a taxi from the ferry dock to the Soggy dollar bar?

Thanks

Jen

Nothing's really in walking distance because the whole island is a big, giant hill. What we did was hire a taxi waiting at the ferry dock and he gave us a brief island tour and dropped us at Ivan's for $5 each. From Ivan's we walked to Soggy Dollar (watch out for slippery rocks and flip flops) and then he picked us up at Soggy Dollar at 2:30 and took us back to the ferry.

It really depends on how you arrive... if you take the ferry, you'll be dropped off in Great Harbour (Where Foxy's is) - it's the main "town" area. White Bay, where Soggy Dollar is, is the next bay over. You could walk, but it's kind of a hike - big hill. When you get off the ferry, there will be taxi's waiting. Generally it's $5 each way to and from White Bay to Great Harbour, if you go over to Little Harbour, Foxy's Taboo or the Bubbly Pool, it's more. I guess you could hike all the way over to the other side of the island where those places I just mentioned are, but I don't think I'd want to. But all of White Bay is definitely walkable... On one end there's Ivan's and on the other is Seddy's.. Soggy Dollar is on the side closer to Seddy's, Jewel's Snack Shack, etc. There's some rocks in the middle, but there's a walkway built up over it now. If you charter a boat or are on a day trip they will probably drop you off in White Bay after they check you into Customs at Great Harbour.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the expert advice. Since we will arrive by Ferry then it seems smart to take the taxi. I sure hope we don't miss something by staying at White Bay.

Last year we were given less then an hour to enjoy the Soggy Dollar Bar - we were disappointed to say the least.

Thanks a bunch! I will have a painkiller in your honor

When we went a few weeks ago, all that was really open was Ivan's and Soggy Dollar. This did not bother us in the least. We had a little lunch, napped on the beach at Ivan's and then walked over to Soggy's to try their world-famous painkillers (much better than everyone else's). But it was very crowded at Soggy; there must have been a dozen or more boats in the water. I didn't have any complaints spending my whole day at White Bay. In fact, it was one of my favorite parts of my trip, and that was AFTER the ocean killed my camera and cell phone.

Jenn,
you will absolutely love Jost. The taxi's are cheap and are pretty much at your beck and call being such a small Ivan. Hope that you get Bin (for a cab driver), he's the greatest person, he's full of laughs, always smiling and he will do pretty much anything you need him to do in regards to drop off and pick ups! You can walk from customs to Foxy's and Corsairs however getting to White Bay is an up hill climb, it would take probably 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you walk. We walked it several times and it's a great workout and definately worth the painkiller at the end. But like I said the cabs are so cheap so if you don't want the exercise grab a cab and hit the beach. Soggy Dollar, Ivan's and the Love Shack a definate must. Have a great trip. We have 86 more days until Jost!
