Thought about the idea of renting a small boat/dingy to explore St. John's cays. How difficult is it to navaigate the waters? How can I identify where Iam in relation to a specific location. ie Franics Bay etc.... Thanks for replys.

Phil,
Navigating the waters of St. John is easy providing you have some experience reading nautical charts and relating them to what you see on shore. Having sailed for over 30 years, I tend to forget that this is a bit of a learned skill, but last summer we did exactly what you are proposing and I was surprised to observe the difficulty my friends were having figuring out where we were when they took their turns at the helm. Things look different from the water than they do from shore, but after a few minutes of tutoring, they all got the hang of it. With all of the reefs (marked and unmarked) and regulations about where you can and can't anchor, etc, just be sure you go over the chart carefully with the rental guys before you cast off.

That said, it's a great way to spend a day!
