We will be back in St. John this Thursday for 10 days and from the looks of it the forecast is for a continued swell from the North which usually makes snorkeling the North shore beaches less than ideal due to visibility etc. Have never really faced this problem other than a day or two in past trips, what would be recommendations for south shore (or other) spots for snorkeling, this is the first year I am bringing my teenage daughter and friend with us and would really like them to experience the great snorkeling in St John. Thanks for any info! Cant wait for Thursday.

Kevin,

We were on St. John last week - the Northern swells and ENE winds were pretty strong while we were there, too, so we weren't able to spend much time on the North Shore beaches. The snorkeling at Haulover Bay and Lameshur Bay was great and protected from the swells and the winds - I've heard that Salt Pond Bay also has great snorkeling, but we didn't get there. We also took a day sailing trip out of Coral Bay to Newfound Bay (on the north side of the East End) and Flanagan Island (just off of the East End) - that was the best snorkeling of our entire trip.

We used "The St. John Beach Guide" by Gerald Singer - it gives great tips about the beaches that are best when the swells are coming in (among other very helpful hints).
