We will be on St. Croix for 5 days and then Puerto Rico for 5 days and want to buy our own snorkeling gear. Should we buy it here before we go or wait until we are there? Where will we get our best deal?

We bought mask and snorkels (body glove) set @ Dicks sporting goods for $20 a set.
Then we just rented flippers for the week instead of having to pack them.Have fun

Believe it or not, I got a set at Target that was really nice. And cheap, too.

Gari Ann,
LOL, that's where we got our gear too and I love it. I would imagine that they would be a bit more expensive on the islands, but maybe not. We did buy a bag that holds the fins, mask and snorkel at Bolongo Bay dive shop last time. That's our carry-on! 🙂

We got ours at The Sports Authority for about $40 and they worked great. I packed my flippers in the bottom of the suitcase and it worked out fine. We also got a mash bag that they would fit in so we could hang them up to dry and then just through them in the back of the Jeep. Make Sure you take along some anti fog spray for your mask.

Or spit in the mask and rub it around. That works too.

Costco has a kids' set for $25 and adults for $40. They're made by U.S. Divers and are nice quality. We probably won't get more than a season or two out of the kids' set, but the adults' set is pretty nice!

Thank you all! We just got back from Target and got the $30 US Diver"s set there. It looks pretty nice. We'll see how it goes. Also, thanks for the tip about the spit in the mask or anit-fog spray. spit is free, we'll try it first!

jasmel: on the spit routine. Spit 101 - spit in mask, rub spit around with finger, then rinse the mask in the seawater.

And if snorkelling from the beach, wait till you get IN the water before putting on your fins. There's nothing so funny as watching someone putting their fins on several feet away from the waterline and then trying to nonchalantly walk...

Have a great trip!

Jasmel,
We use a little dish detergent mixed in water & dip mask in it. Hubby bought a little bottle for that reason & when we went on our boat trip the crew had a pail filled with dish detergent/water. Now they put more detergent than we did...not an exact science here..but I wear contacts & the could feel the soap in my eyes a little on that trip. No fog at all

You might want to clean the masks with toothpaste before you use them. This will help get any silicone off and also help with less fog.
