I'm planning on going in Feb 2011. I'm looking at places to stay with out going over a $150/night budget. I looked at the Inn at Tamarind Court. Is there any other places in that range that are nice for a solo traveler? When I look at places like expedia they only have the camps and things WAY over the price range. Do you know where I can look for places to stay? I'd prefer to stay on St John as to St Thomas. Any suggestions??
Thanks!!!

$150 a night is really tight, especially during high season. You might have more options on STT.

You can check out Maho, http://www.maho.org/maho.cfm Cinnamon Bay Campgrounds, http://www.cinnamonbay.com/ Samuel Cottages, http://samuelcottages.com/_wsn/page3.html and The St. John Inn, http://www.stjohninn.com/rates_stjohninn.html Samuel Cottages is really close to town and you could walk to the grocery store, bars and restaurants, as well as the taxi stand (to get you to the beaches).

Which would you prefer as closest to town and cleaner, views for a single traveler? Samuel cottages or St. John Inn? Any thoughts would be great as I'm interested in this as well but don't want to rent a car and do taxi and or walking.

Don't give up on ST John. In my opinion much better option all around. Check out the options others have given you.

If and when I ever travel to St. John by myself I'm staying at either St. John Inn or Samuel Cottages. They seem fairly close to town and safe to me from what I have read. I think I would freak staying in St. Thomas as it is big and I don't stay there other than travel through to the Red hook dock to get to St. John. Plus I don't want to rent a car and will walk to town and stores and cab it to the beaches.

To come to a decision about St Thomas based solely on traveling from the airport to the Red Hook ferry terminal really is very unfair although not unusual. There is WAY more to STT than that busy and congested run and who knows but that one day you might get to know it. Cheers!

Go to www.vrbo.com and "East End" St Thomas condo rentals at Sapphire. There are some studio and 1BR rentals there which are in your price range. Sapphire is one of the most beautiful beaches on STT and is close to the Red Hook ferry terminal for day trips over to St John. Good luck with your planning!

Tamarind Court is a great option. If you wanted something with a kitchen check out:
