Hi! The family is heading for St Croix in Sept for a week. This is the first visit to the VI for us. Would like some feed back on safest places to go in the evening. There are 5 adults in the group going. No children. Not really into drinking and partying, just good entertainment. I'm kind of worried about the possibility of hurricanes (something my husband forgot to mention when he booked this trip!) and safety in the islands. This last March we went to St Kitts and Nevis and had a fantastic time. We are hoping for a comparable time in St Croix.

It is very safe here. Just take the same precautions you take at home. When you get here, look in the local papers and ask around to find things to do in the evening. Mostly, we have bands that play at the restaurants.

September is usually rainy, but wash-out days are rare. A bad storm is unlikely.

Hello Sherih,

Lots of good dining out oppurtunties - good restaurants on St. Croix. You might try Off the Wall for a casual breakfast/Lunch or Dinner, Rumrunners for happy hour and/or dinner, The Mermaid at the Buccaneer has good lunch and the Terrace I believe has live entertainment and is a more fancy dining experience then the Mermaid their beach front restaurant, Tutu Bene is another good choice for dinner and Bacchaus. Good lunch at the Brewpub. You can visit the Casino for live entertainment and also on Tuesday or Wednesday nights (can't remember which night so call them once on island and find out) the Hotel on the Cay has live entertainment at a beach bbq. Keep an eye out for live music venues when you get on island in the paper.

Sherih,

We were there this past spring and had a blast! Don't worry about safety. That was my main concern after hearing so many rumors. We were there for 3 weeks and had no trouble whatsoever. The local people were very nice to us and *thankfully* very patient with our driving! We didn't go anywhere we felt unsure about-- just like here at home we have places we learn to leave alone. You can tell.

You're going at a time when tourism is at a low point we've heard, so some of the downtown shops might be closed for the season. We left May6 and one large shop had totally closed up already with signs up that it would open again in October. Wander all around the streets downtown and in Gallows Bay for shops that have good things. They're stuck here and there, so take your time and have fun!

We enjoyed Rumrunners for breakfast and lunch while downtown. If you sit right by the water in the mornings these large crabs come up --cautiously-- and take pieces of your toast and pancakes! Quite a sight! (I had my feet up on the seat until I realized they were just as worried about me-- and were only interested in the food!) Also The Golden Rail at Gallows Bay was interesting-- outside, very casual-- good food, and the biggest hottest cup of coffee I've had in awhile!

If you're driving down to t heCane Bay area then eat at Off the Wall. It's very casual, but don't let that fool you--- huge menu and we were pleasantly surprised! On up the road is the Carambola-- a VERY pleasant surprise because it's so tropical and just a nice resort. We drove out there one day and knew we had to go back at night. Lots of atmosphere. On Friday nights they have this huge buffet called Pirates Night with live entertainment. Very nice. When we win the lottery, we're going back to stay there for a month! If you play golf don't miss the Carambola golf course. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is supposed to really be something.

We also enjoyed eating at Cheeseburgers in Paradise for lunch. THey have nightly entertainment, too, we heard. Tutto Bene was a good surprise, too, very nice atmosphere inside. THe Case Place had a delicious crab dip appetizer and we loved their ribs. Tender. DON'T miss The Terrace at the Bucanneer for dinner! We sat at a table by the outside wall and had the most georgous view of the island at night! They had steel band music on Sunday night starting at 8 I believe. You might want to call.
I believe Saturday nights are when Chenay Bay have their Caribbean buffet with live music and Mocko Jumbies, glass walker. Duggans at the Reef was a popular place, we enjoyed the food and atmosphere. And on Friday's they had a Steel band.

Don't let the outside of a place deter you from going in! We were hesitant about some and ended up enjoying them the most! My husband is still in mourning about our not going to No Bones because I was not impressed with the outside--- especially since so many people say not to miss it! We also didn't get to go downtown to eat at night at the restaurants and now we know we reallymissed something! I'll just have to add it to my list of "when we go back to St Croix"...

Make sure you go to Buck Island for a 1/2 or whole day trip. You'll never forget it.

If you want to ask me any questions my e-mail is [email protected].
We totally enjoyed our trip and hope you do ,too!

I just returned from St. Croix yesterday and I miss it so much. We enjoyed so many things that we just happened upon by just being out. I can't wait to return hopefully for the next Jump Up. Does anyone have a contact for someone trying to find a housesitter for next summer? I really want to go back for a long stay. Cissy

sherih-

just for your knowledge.... there's a new coffee shop in frederiksted (tropical java). if you happen to be staying in the west end, i highly recommend you visit this new spot. it's bound to be the next big thing for our island. although there are a couple of other coffee shops in christiansted, tropical java has an ambiance that the others are lacking. it's a place to kick back and relax.... just to enjoy your time there. although there is construction on the waterfront, the atmosphere is still above the rest. it's located on strand street on the waterfront, next to scubawest. they aren't open very late, so make sure you stop by in the morning or early afternoon. enjoy your trip to our secret paradise.

Cissy,

Why don't you write a trip report for the board. We'll be there in 2 weeks and can hardly wait. Always like reading the trip reports.
