Hello all,
We will be on STX for three weeks April-May. I am looking for guidance on best dive shops (I have my OW cert, may want to get more advanced training or may just want to dive.) My husband and I are also curious about day sails- any recommendations? I am also looking for advice on the best places to shop for food, especially reasonably priced and/or local and fresh. Any great street vendors? Finally, I have the guidebooks, I have lurked on this board for quite a while and have visited the other USVIs and BVIs. Any suggestions of things to do or see that might not be mentioned or that are a little unusual? Sorry for including so many questions and grateful for anything this group's collective wisdom may provide!

We dive with "N to the Blue" and like them very much. There are several excellent dive operations. Where are you staying?

We shop at Plaza Extra. There are two large stores and have good variety and fair prices. There are fish and vegetable vendors on the side of the road. I buy veggies, but not fish.

only my opinion.........
.dive shop .......Dive experience.... Michele Poug.......340-773-3307......big fish dives......check out the web-site

shopping .......big bulk.....cost u-less...big bulk items .tp..paper towels ....coffee!!! ......or .....Merchant Markets...340-773-5400 ..a food whole seller who also sells to the public....behind Scotia bank in sunny isle.........you have to call your order in on the phone....great for whole rib eyes and any large quainty items (restaurant supplier).......plaza for the rest.......princess fish on Wednesdays when her order comes in......you can also ask her for special fish or seafood orders the week prior..(before Friday)......Romi is her name .great lady.......and the farm in the rain forest for produce..........you will have to stop at Norma's/ Domino club (beer drinking pigs) for directions its to hard to explain in a short sentence........this is where I shop for food....

Don't miss........Tan Tan tours.........ask for Wave .......you can customise your trip but plan on a full day tour........this will give you a end to end off road tour of the hard to get to places on STX......... places even my 4x4 has issues with...........

Go to the Tamarind Beach on the far West end. Ask for Uncle Jerry at the beach shack. It is a quiet beach with the best sun and snorkeling. He is the uncle of one of my employees. Tell him Scotty and Cameron send love.

Enjoy,
cameron

The pier in Frederiksted is an awesome dive. Scubawest, on Strand Street, does daily pier dives and also does night dives which are incredible. Usually see baby seahorses, octopus, turtles and squid and loads of fish. I've dove the pier at least 50 times and never been bored. Drive out West for the day, dive, have lunch and go to a beach bar, go to the rainforest and see the beer-drinking pigs.

Sorry you feel that way flounder. But actually many people who live out west do use Scubawest. I personally have done all my certs with Scubawest and never dive with anyone else. Their shop has just been redesigned, they have 2 wonderful instructors and a new engine on their boat. All their charters are small, personable and professionally run. Their rates are no more expensive than any other dive operation on the island. They are in no way a "local joke" as you suggest, and many many many people out west (including myself) would take strong opposition to your "opinion."

Do you have something personal against them or any specific reasons why you do not their operation? Considering that Frederiksted does not have the extensive tourism other areas have to begin with, I can't see how any business out west would be running a "tourist scam."

Anyway, I have been diving with Scubawest for several years and always enjoyed myself and felt very well taken care of.

Enjoy diving St. Croix.

Flounder does tend to blurt out some pretty strong stuff from time to time. I would say that one should look at the more reasoned opinions. Scubawest were always very god when we dove with them. Nto the Blue - good. SCUBA in C'sted - good.
