Locals, would appreciate car rental company recommendations. doing an east end villa rental (privately this time rather than through agency) Who can you recommend for good service, clean safe cars and easy access to ferry dock at Cruz?

Thanks!

Koen

I'm not a local but I have rented from St. John Car Rental for years and always get a good Jeep and the bonus of using their lot in town. If I couldn't rent from them I'd go to Penn's or Courtesy for the parking if nothing else.

Also not a local, but we have used Varlack on our trips and they have been great. No problems!

We stayed near the east end and used Courtesy with no problems. Jeep was clean and fairly new. They are about three blocks straight up the road from the dock. They also will meet you when the ferry comes in. Definitely rent from a company that lets you park in their lot when you come into town. Courtesy and several others let you do that, but not all STJ rental companies do.

We rent from Penn's and have been very satisfied. We previously rented from St John Car Rental and wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again. We were always very satisfied with SJCR and usually stick with what we know and are satisfied with, but I noticed on VI forums that Penns seemed to be held in really warm regard by people who'd used them. I decided to try them and have stayed with them. They're nice folks, close to the ferry dock and have a good sized lot to use when in Cruz Bay. I should mention that the companies with lots don't guarantee that there will be a space to park. The policy is that we're free to use their lot if there's space, but there usually is .

Remember, you can't leave St. John to go to St. Thomas with a rental car.

My wife and I have used Conrad Sutton for the past 5 years; his lot is near the Lime Inn downtown and you can park there for free during your stay. He also includes insurance in his price, which is nice (it's free but you have to ask for it!) If you are not leaving STJ immediately after you drop off the car, Conrad will also give you a free ride back to your hotel or villa. Here's his website, good luck! http://www.conradcars.com/
