I have the Sea Spirit rented, reservations for a jeep too. Not too worried about the roads, grew up in WV driving a Jeep on dirt roads, before I was of legal driving age, and dodging stray cows and sheep, so figure goats and donkeys won't be too different. Interested in at least one day sail but all the sailboats sound and look really good that are listed on the web, so hard to pick one. Does anyone have any strong recommendations? Also, how far ahead do I need to book for two people? Would prefer booking with someone that accepted credit cards, just less hassle. Really psyched about St. John. Was at St Croix in Feb and loved it.

I have to recommend two day sails which depend on which side of the island you want to go from. We went out with each of these for snorkeling this past April. They each only take out 6 passengers.
Out of Cruz Bay Captain Phil of the Wayward Sailor is wonderful. He has been in the USVI for many years and loves the underwater world. He would be a perfect daysail if you are looking for an education and some great snorkeling. This is not a party boat. Not as many daysails are available in October so you may want to book with Captain Phil before you leave. He told me that he has people who make reservations up to a year in advance. We paid in cash. The link for his web site is here:

The other is Captain Rick and Robin Gallup of the sailboat Long Distance. They are out of Coral Bay. They may not be on St. John in October so I would definitely call them to find out. Robin will guide you on a snorkel tour. This again is a very relaxing sail on what they call "the quiet side of the island". Also very nice people. There web site mentions cash or checks. Here is a link to their web page:

If you want more details I wrote about each of these in my trip report in mid April.
Have a nice time.

What part of WV are you from? does UF prof mean U of Fairmont? I live in Mason Co. WV, a WVU grad. We are making our first trip to the VI in April. We thought about going in the fall, but I didn't want to risk a hurricane, as they say this season will be an active one like last year. Keep us posted on your plans and trip!

My wife and I are originally from Monroe county and still have some family there. UF is University of Florida. My wife is a WVU grad. We were in St Croix in Feb of this year and loved it. This will be our first trip to St John and are really looking froward to it. We live in Florida so I hope the hurricane season is not as active as it has been over the past two years.

We live in Ravenswood and were on STJ in May. Truly vacation in paradise. If I could just figure out how to live there full time! have a ball!

Ravenswood - wow small world. I work in Ripley and my husband is an elect. engineer at Alcan.

I want to go over to STJ 1 or 2 days while we're at STT. My husband wanted us to stay there, but I wanted to try Secret Harbour instead, and then just visit STJ.

Did you post a trip report? I am addicted to reading about everyone's adventures.

I did a short report compared to some that I read and enjoy on this board. It is really ironic that we stayed at Point Pleasant Resort. It was condo rental with great views of Coki and STJ. If you have never stayed on the east end you should give it a try.

UF Prof - I also hope for your sake that this hurricane season is not as bad as last year. If feel so sorry for people who have to constantly board up their homes, do repairs, over and over. Florida is a great place to visit, but I'll stay here in WV thank you! Tell your wife "Go Mountaineers!"
