Hello all,
I am sure you have all seen the NOAA predictions for this year. I am planning a September honeymoon in St. John and I am a little nervous. Does anyone have some seasoned Caribbean advice for me to calm my nerves?

Don't get consumed worrying about the weather, enjoy your vacation, just keep an eye on whats happening, take Pia's advice buy trip insurance. Take extra cash just in case, we were caught in Hurricane Hugo in 1989, if it wasn't for sharing a room with another couple we would not have been able to pay for the room or food.

How do Villa managers handle that type of problem? Say your renting for a week a hurricane comes in, grounds all planes and you need to stay a few days longer. They have people coming in right behind you and your out of money for a longer stay and are stuck. Would they move you to another villa or say tough and you have to camp at the dock for a few days?

Don't know about villas, but at some hotels if the hurricane is coming right before you plan to arrive, they will cancel your reservation at no cost. If your stay is extended by the hurricane, most will give you some special rate, but you do have to pay. The hotel still has all it's expenses.

I guess before we book anything with a villa management and traveling within hurricane season I better ask about this. So I can prepare accordling. We never have given it a thought as we have mostly traveled in May.

Usually if you can't get out, nobody can get in either. Hurricanes don't "sneak" up on us. We generally have a lot of forewarning and can tell if one is going to be a threat to us. Pia had the best advice! Trip insurance is a good idea. Then, as time gets closer, you can watch the Tropical Update that is every hour at 50 minutes past the hour on the Weather Channel. They tell of storms out there, their projected path, and their projected time frame of arrival in our area. Try not to stress about the weather too much. There is not a lot one can do about it and the worrying will wear you down. Oh, just to let you know, our daily forecast pretty much says the same thing every day and it always includes a chance of rain. This means that it might rain at some point in the day but rarely means a whole day of rain unless there is a tropical storm sitting on top of us. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. September in St. John is my favorite time of year!
