If you have it bring it and avoid the hassle of renting on site. Trunk is a beautiful beach and the snorkeling is okay but it can get 'crowded if a fair number of ships are in. If you can get to it try Maho. Hawksnest is also a good option.

I'm with Chris on his suggestions. Trunk is a gorgeous beach but the underwater snorkel trail is nothing like it used to be. Of course now I remember that you're renting from Hertz so can't take your car over with a cooler and suchlike, plus you have an infant and need facilities - so Trunk or Cinnamon would be your best options and, depending on St Thomas cruise ship schedules, Cinnamon will probably be less crowded than Trunk. Have fun.

I have found the Snorkeling to be better on the right side of the Cay at Trunk. The trail is on the left side and it is usually crowded and very little to see.
