hi all, the hubby and i have been debating on renting a car or taking the taxis on st. john. this is only for one day explorling and snorkling. we plan on doing as much as possible, and hitting as many beaches as possible, say 2 hours at each place. can anyone give us advise on if it would be worth it to rent a car for a day, or should we just go with the taxis. what would you recommend. thanks all , scooby

where are you staying on st.john ?cruz bay area/coral bay ? this would help..although whenever we go we always rent a vehicle for our entire stay. the freedom of being able to drive around the island ourselves is so much more of an adventure!! come and go at your lesiure, stop where ever/ when ever you choose w/out depending on a taxi.i don't even know if it's that easy to get a taxi between cruz bay & coral bay...and each is a must see!! this is a friendly, beautiful island..get out and see it !!!

hey guys, we are staying on st. thomas and taking the early morning ferry from dawn til one of the last ferrys back. want to see as much as possible without rushing to much i guess. i think we should rent a car if possible, the hubby says take a taxi. i disagree. i think we would be able to see more renting a car, rather then waiting for taxis, plus save some money. any advise? thanks all, scooby

scooby,

We went over for a day last November and after getting off the ferry in Cruz Bay, we just walked to the first car rental place we found and rented a 4WD for the day. It worked great and we were in control of what we wanted to do. Driving was no problem and we would definitely recommend renting a 4WD for the day.

Just a thought, with a tour (safari taxi bus) not only can you see a lot of beautiful St. John but you will learn about the history and all the interesting facts about the plants
etc. Then after you know a little you can always come back and rent a 4WD and explore on your own. I would find out if you can even rent a vehicle for one day. Enjoy.

I would rent a jeep or suzuki and avoid the taxi you will never get the true island feel in a cab or on one of those safari rip offs,,just an opinion,

I'd definitely recommend getting a vehicle. I'd also recommend getting a guidebook such as "Feet, Fins & 4WD" or STJ Off the Beaten Track". If you just wanted to go to Trunk, then hang out in Cruz Bay, taxis would serve you fine. It sounds like you're a lot more adventurous than that, so you definitely want your own wheels. That way you can go where you like, stay as long as you want, change your plans on a whim.

Most times of year you can easily find a rental for the day just by getting the early ferry and walking up to the agencies. Many are located within a block or two of the ferry. During the very busy times it can be a challenge. Since it's just for a day, I'd take the first vehicle I could find and not waste any snorkeling time doing comparison shopping.

A note that wasn't touched on this subject is also time. I would recommend a rental car, because when we went, we used taxis exclusively. We often had to wait for the taxis to fill up before the driver would leave. He wanted to make it worth his while, but in the meantime, we were wasting precious vacation time sitting in a taxi.
Also, In one instance, the driver was driving so fast, and wild I was beyond angry...
You're at their mercy, someone you don't know , your life in their hands, wasting your vacation time, and putting you at risk for an accident.

you might also consider renting a vehicle in St Thomas and taking it over on the ferry. by the time you pay to take a taxi to the ferry at red hook and pay once you get back you could almost pay the one day rental and still have a vehicle on St John
