Hi all,

We were first time visitors to St. John last May. Absolutely loved it - cannot say enough about how beautiful and wonderful our experience was. We are planning another trip in April of '09 and are considering Tortola. We loved visiting there but hated to have to leave at 4:30 because of customs. We are considering staying on Tortola and renting a boat to go back and forth between the islands. Anyone have any suggestions as to (1) is this a good idea and (2) good places to stay on Tortola and/or boat rentals? Thanks so much,

Marilee

One detail, you can't just drive back and forth between the US and BVI. You have to go through Customs and Immigration each way, each time.

Commuting from Tortola to USVI is best done using the ferries. Customs can be a huge delay on some days especially if ou are coming in my private boat.

Search Tortola on Google and you will find lots. I have to commute there often from STT and normally stay @ Maria's by the Sea, Walking distance from ferry dock and xruise ship docks on the water.

BVI in general has lots to over whether you stay on Tortola, for to Virgona Gorda, Visit Jost Van Dyke or my all time Favorite, Anegada!

I'm thinking she might have been talking about going back and forth to islands in the BVI? If so, Tortola is a great central location to Virgin Gorda, JVD, etc...If you are wanting to rent a powerboat you can check with King Charters..we did just that and went to Norman Island, etc..Let me know if you have any questions..we are going to Tortola for the second time this October....There are many great villas, etc to choose for rentals..The others are correct in that if you want to go to STJ though, you will need to take the ferry and clear customs...Also, there are ferrys that run from Tortola to JVD, VG, etc for day trips...

We have done 2 sailboat charters and loved visiting the BVI from the water so we tried 2 weeks on Tortola but found that visiting from a boat and staying there were 2 different things. We won't do it again. We're glad we did but I have to tell you it was 2 of the longest weeks of my life. Tortola wasn't for me. I'm at St. John gal and Tortola is nothing like STJ.

Hi Diana,

Can you tell me why you found Tortola lacking? Is it the nightlife and/or beach? We really want to have a good experience!

Thanks,

Marilee
