I'll be in St. Thomas for 1 day, arriving at 5 p.m., I'm staying at Hotel 1812 with my fiancee and 4 friends. We don't plan on renting a car. We'll be in St. Thomas for exactly 24 hours before we begin a sailing trip. I'd appreciate any input on restaurants/bars near our hotel.

Do you mean Hotel 1829? If so, there's Herve', a gourmet restaurant next door with a lovely view of the Harbor. The Hotel itself has a restaurant.

You're also not that far from Blackbeard's Castle, and there's a restaurant there, The Inn at Blackbeard's Castle.

You're also within walking distance of the town waterfront, and there you'll find Tavern on the Waterfront. If you want more casual fare, The Greenhouse along the waterfront is very popular for bar food and drinks.

I'd put Cuzzin's on Back Street on the top of the list.

Hotel 1829 doesn't have a restaurant, they only serve a continental breakfast. If you are talking about Hotel 1829 - how did you manage to get it for one night? We stayed for one night in April 05 and wanted to stay again in April 06 for one night. After several attempts by email and then phone, they told me they won't take a reseravation for one night only during high season. We're very disappointed as we enjoyed our stay there last year.

My friend made the reservation. If they do have a "one night only" policy may'be they made an exception b/c there's six of us, three rooms.

DH and I stayed at Hotel 1829 just a few weeks ago for one night before going to STJ. The entire downtown Charlotte Amalie is a 2 minute walk down a hill. You'll have no problemn finding breakfast, dinner or lunch in all shapes and sizes.

Hotel 1829 does not have a restaurant. It has a bar and continental breakfast. While we were there we had a late lunch at Gladys Cafe in one of the alleys downtown and then breakfast at Time for A Break also in one of the alleys. Just take a stroll and look for signs. We've also gone to Coconuts in one of the back alleys behind Imperial Jewelers. Very small bar with good bar food and drinks. Also had lunch at Bumpa's. Great prices for being right downtown.

Everyone on this forum reccomends Cuzzin's but I'm not sure where it is.

Cuzzin's is direct across the street from Coconuts on Back Street!

The folks at 1829 also own Blackbeard's. They no longer have any restaurants open. They also closed The Inn at Blackbeard's. They are working on historic tours now and I believe that this may be the last year for 1829 as a hotel. So I have heard.

Darn it! I really wanted to try it, too. But, fortunately, I saw the sign for Gladys Cafe and went there instead. I'll have to hit Cuzzin's next year.

Thanks for posting the update, Ron. Why is it that people don't take the signs down when something closes???? I pass by Blackbeard's every morning, and see the sign every day so I assumed it was still open.

Historical tours to support Hotel 1829???? That's a lot of tours!!!

Hello ms411,

Blackbeards, Hotel 1829, Villa Noltan, Haagensen House are on the tour they offer... you can read about it at http://www.blackbeardscastle.com/historic-walking-tour.htm.

Trust me the amount of tours they do from the cruise ships alone could buy anyone a small yacht after a year or two! No headache of kitchens, maids, reservations and the like!
