Did I read the ferry schedule correct that the ferry between St Thomas and St Croix is not currently not operating ?
We are travelling to the AVI's in November for our honeymoon and considering staying 5 nights at Bongolo Bay or Sugar bay resort in St Thomas and the 5 nights at the Renaissance in St Croix....any feedback on these two choice of islands and resorts would be appreciated. We wanted to do both an AI and regular meal plan resort.
Thanks and looking forward to our travels

You are correct, no ferry service. Small plane - CapeAir, or seaplane - Seaborne Airlines, are your only options. And the islands are usually referred to as the USVI's.

Is it possible to find someone to privately take a party from St John to St Croix by water vs using a plane?

Probably not. It took the ferry (when it was running) 90 - 120 minutes, one way. There is a deep trench between STT and STX, which means the ride can be very rough. I doubt you can find a captain to provide a charter and if you could, I expect the cost would be prohibitive.

Highly unlikely and improbable. Even the ferry when running (it's a large vessel) is known locally as "The Barf Barge" or "The Vomit Comet" as the crossing in deep water can be very rough. You may want to do some more research before you finalize your plans. AI isn't a good idea here (which is why it's offered at only a couple of places) and if you haven't looked into renting a condo that's something you also might consider. Realize too that while St Thomas is very close to St John and the neighboring British Virgin Islands, St Croix is quite a distance away and on its own with no other islands close by. Just a couple of thoughts.

Take the Seaplane via Seaborne if you are going to fly to STX--2 pilots, larger aircraft, and...how many times in your life will you take off and land on water??

The ferry crashed into St James Island after St John Carnival on July 4 last year...still haven't heard the full story on what in hell was happening on the bridge when the only island he could possibly have struck was hit dead on 🙂 Hummer in the front seat is what I heard.

Also, I would seriously consider 5 nights on STT and 3-4 on Jost Van Dyke or Tortola...they are right next door and an easy ferry ride. St John is also easily day trippable.
