Sorry if this question is asked over and over again - I am scouring the board for bits and pieces but decided to give it a shot and post.

we're coming to STJ on April 22 for the first time ever (!!!!) (renting Orchid Villa) and are interested in a day trip (or two) to the various islands/reefs. We wouldn't mind being the only 2 on the boat with the captain/mate, but then we also would enjoy going with about 6 or 8 other people. We aren't too keen on a bigger boat with a ton of people.

can you recommend some captains/boats? Sailboat preferred, motor boat is acceptable (maybe even a small dinghy if its just us and a guide)

thanks for any and all help!

Contact Peter, sailbreath.com. He's got a sailboat running out of Coral Bay w/ day trips for +/- 6 people. Snorkeling is the main activity at unique spots around the east side. Trip fee (was $60 PP for Mrs. Nyestreet and me 2 years ago, no credit cards) includes lunch and all the ice cold bottles of Heinekin you can drink. The reason I mention no credit cards is I tried to pay w/ one, had no cash, and Peter graciously extended me credit. I paid him the next day. He will only sail if he has enough fares to make the trip practical. John

We just returned (yesterday) form a first time visit to STJ. Stayed with our 2 kids (10,13) in a private rental home in Coral Bay and chartered a day motor boat trip w/ Lion in Da Sun. I can say we spent the majority of the vacation snorkeling, swimming and hiking. The trip witrh Josh, one of the two young bothers that is starting up this charter boat business, was a wonderful surprise.

Nice guy, smart, friendly, courteous and great with kids.

We did Norman, Peter, Indians (the best...spend an extra loop around these), JVD and the Sandy Spit/Cay Isles.

I'd do it again. $475/day + $120 for gas.

There are several boats to chose from on St John. Some leave from Coral Bay and some from Cruz Bay. I would choose the bay closest to where you're staying.
