Sunday brunch at Miss Lucy's. I love the french toast. Once, I did see a chicken jump up on the table and take away my niece's breakfast, but that is part of the fun of St.John. They made her more breakfast. Just keep a good eye on the chickens and your food. Sitting out with great food alongside the ocean and listening to good jazz music is wonderful. It's close to Lamseshur and SaltPond if you wanted to hit those beaches afterwards. Having dinner there with a full moon is also wonderful. The only thing I didn't like there was the steak, but that is not their specialty. Shipwreck in Coral Bay is also one our favorites. We also like Skinny Legs and Island Blues in that same area. It has been two years since we have been there so I hope my suggestions are still good. We will be going again this May, and I am on this board getting my St. John fix until I can get there. In Cruz Bay we also like The Balcony and another fancy looking place with outside seating down below them. Can't remember the name. We also like La Tapa and Morgan's Mango (which we have gone back and forth on). In Cruz Bay, it is easy to just walk around and look at all the menus. Fish Trap has also been good for us in the past. The little Mexican place has good Mexican food. The Deli in the big, fancy shopping area has great food---salads, veggies, etc. Great for picnic lunches or meals in your house or condo.

In no particular order here are my favorites:

Zozo's- fine dining
Rhumblines- Great atmosphere and spicy food
La Tapa- fine dining
Lime Inn- consistently good
Beach Bar- great bar food
Skinny Legs- Coral Bay Burgers
Deli Grotto- Massive sandwiches for the beach
Sun Dog Cafe/gecko Gazebo- Great lunch spot with fun drinks
JJ's- Basic food but great to sit outside and watch the town

Here's a Little advise I learned the hard way. Years ago when hubby and I visited St. John we decided to drive to Shipwreck Landing for a quick lunch. Once there we were seated by the open air side of the restaurant right next to some beautiful flowers. After we ordered a small skinny cat jumped up and into the restaurant by our feet. Well when the waitress came back she said DONT try to pet the cat he's not very nice. And I though well, with the animal profession that I'm in I would know if it's a nice cat or not. So I leaned down to pet the cat and give him a little bite of what I had and he hissed and bit my hand so hard it drew blood. My husband said that will teach ya. So my St. John dining lesson here is if they restaurant staff says don't do something just DONT DO IT. Especially if it has to do with a wild animal. But the food was excellent and eating through the pain.

FYI The Balcony in Cruz Bay has closed down.

My favorites in Cruz Bay are ZoZo's, Waterfront Bistro and Rhumblines and in Coral Bay Sweet Plantains and Shipwreck

Crazy crackers has good Mexican food. The Owner spent some time learning authentic Mexican dishes from some top chefs in Mexico.

Would all of you who have been kind enough to respond to this question also be willing to give me a range of prices? Like lunch can be had for $15-20 and dinner for ? I live near beach islands where people vacation (Martha's Vineyard, Block Island) and I know island prices, especially in vacation locations, can be expensive. But I have never eaten in STT or STJ and have no idea what to expect. I am planning a trip fo 12/2010 and just want an idea about how to budget for eating out. We'll want to purchase groceries for breakfast and lunch meals, and we'll eat dinner at restaurants. We'll be staying in the Concordia tents. Thank you, Laurie

I make really good breakfasts and bake really good bread, having said that, two of my favorites are: Hinds in Cruz Bay and Sweet Plantains in Coral Bay. Having been coming here for 30+ years restaruants on STJ come and go, it is a tough business to run.

There are many that are good, these two to me stand out.

Enjoy.

Sweet Plantains is just a little past the small shopping center in Coral Bay.

To me the prices seem reasonable and not more expensive and maybe less than prices in the St. Louis area. But, I can't really remvber for sure. Fortunately, I will be there for two weeks starting May 20th. I will try to remember to respond when I get home from that trip. You could also ask the question again after that time.

JJ's Texas Coast Cafe in Cruz Bay and the Inn at Tamarind Court (just up the road a bit towards the Westin) do nice breakfasts. When we're moving a bit slow and are just past breakfast time, we sometimes stop at the Hercules Pate shop in Cruz Bay and grab several different pates (beef, saltfish, chicken) for the ride to the beach.

$10 to $12 per person at Sheila's Pot and Uncle Joes (if that much).
