Does anyone know if this guy is still around?? I found him through Trip Advisor but the date was from 2007. If so can anyone put me in contact with him... I am looking to do a day charter and it sounds like this guy is a blast for a boat capt!!! Thanks!

Can't help you as although I know who you're talking about I haven't seen his name around for a long time now. He used to officiate at weddings. As far as the captaining is concerned I believe he came in for a bit of flak where that's concerned as he wasn't a licensed captain. The local charterers have to regularly jump through hoops to keep up with their licenses, insurances and maintenance requirements and it's wise to bear that in mind when contracting with someone to go out for a daysail. There are plenty of licensed captains around who'll show you a wonderful time and I'm sure you'll find one to suit! If you could spell out in a little more detail exactly what you're looking for, I've no doubt you'll be given some suggestions!

Thanks so much for the input! We are renting a power boat and planning on going around the BVI's...mainly JVD(soggy dollar) and maybe a few other bar locations that people would suggest.

Then I'm guessing you're looking for a captain to man the bareboat you're renting? An excellent idea particularly if you're planning on indulging at various pit stops! Have you asked the charter company for a captain? They usually have a list available.

Yes they will be providing one for us. After your 1st response I booked it with a captain. We are renting from see and ski...read some good reviews on them and their price seem to be one of the best. Do you know this company? Any input on them? We are planning to head over to Soggy Dollar and Foxy's. Maybe the Bath's but that seems pretty far anf the price of fuel doesn't seem worth the trip. Maybe another bar or two if we have time and it isn't far off from JVD...any suggestions?? Do you know what the average price of fuel is now on STT?? Thanks for all your help!

I didn't check the price of diesel but I did put gas in my car today and it was $4.94/gallon for regular. I think you'll find plenty to do and see without trekking all the way to the Baths - although they're definitely worth a trip! But maybe save them for another time. I'm not personally familiar with the See and Ski operation but haven't heard anything negative about it and I'm sure you'll be in good hands. Local captains know these waters well so just tell him what you're looking for and he'll gear the day towards that. Do get in some snorkeling too as there are some great spots offshore which are definitely worth taking in. Above all have fun and don't drink so much that you miss holding onto the memories!

See and Ski has been in operation a long time - one of the original power boat rental companies from the 80's. They have great, clean, well maintained vessels and only hire very competent Captains to drive them.
The 4 stroke Honda outboards are very efficient on fuel use-age and the twin hulls easily driven so unless Drakes Passage is unusually rough a trip to the Baths would not be too bad on fuel consumption - if you are planning on visiting Norman, Peter, or Cooper Is. you are well over 1/2 way there anyway. If you just want to attend the JVD bar association you won't have to worry about fuel usage - it is a fairly short ride and the alcohol bill will be much more than the gasoline.

Great thanks for all the info. Any places outside of JVD that has fun bar atmosphere and nice beach to hang out on??

Its a shame STT Resident is posting false information once again. I am a licensed captain and have been captaining for years. I am a wedding officiate so I do that full time as I officiate around 500 weddings a year. I offer free captain services when I have time available in my schedule so I get a free day on the water since I got rid of my boat when I had kids. April, May June and November are tough because of my wedding schedule but any other month finding a day open shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I rent boats from See & Ski and I agree those are the best rental boats on island, and I've rented from all of the other places. See & Ski has some of the friendliest and best captains around, including the owners son Thomas who is a great guy.

Enjoy your trip, I'm sure you will have fun no matter who you go with. The BVIs are magical.

False information - once again? :S When you first started offering your free services as a captain you weren't licensed but, according to this thread from a few years back, finally did become so. The thread is self-explanatory.

I was neither incorrect nor posting false information in saying that I believed you came in for a bit of flak, and now you've had the opportunity to not only assure everyone that you're still here but that you are in fact licensed and have been for some time. Good news.

The Baths is totally worth the trip to explore the caves. Try to arrive as early as possible. Snorkeling at the Baths is so-so. Much better snorkeling stops on the trip back from VG.

Wow! Well said! I couldn't agree more and only wish that you had followed exactly that advice when you set out a couple of months back to totally besmirch my reputation with a dedicated slime campaign on this very website. If you could bring yourself to read my post and read the thread which I subsequently linked instead of once again leaping into a self-created fray you might just learn something ...

Oh, and by the way, it's "livelihood" not "lively hood" and "borders" not "boarders".

Hi Stu,

sorry that people are "bashing" your reputation. Maybe next year when we come back I will look you up to see if you are available. Do you have a website or an email so I can store it. We usually come down here the first week or two of may every year for a week. I did rent through see and ski and have read some good things about them. We plan on hopefully doing some snorkeling then heading over to bars to have some fun! I hear see and ski has twin honda 4 strokes on the back of their 26'. knowing they are pretty efficient, could you "guesstimate" how much they would burn heading over to the Bath's? We hear it's an hour and half over and back plus stops along the way. Anyways thanks for any info you can provide!

Dan

I see that Stu chimed in here - and realize that this can be a sensitive issue. But I have 1st hand experience - so I thought I would add...

My wife and I, and friends vacationing with us while in StJ, have used Stu a few times now in the 7 years we have been coming to StJ. I cannot say enough how great it has been to hang-out with Stu when we have had the opportunity to hook-up (based on his busy schedule). We even shared a boat one year with his sister and her friend when they were visiting the islands. I have also had a few other friends that have gone out with Stu via my recommendation - and they have all immensely enjoyed themselves and still talk about the great time they had.

It is correct that he doesn't charge, and pays his own way - except for the Bare-boat cost and gas which we gladly cover. I have also chartered with official companies (eg. Bad Kitty, NH2), and they have been excellent as well. However, I like the flexibity to move around based on weather and last minute inclinations to check something different out - plus not have to deal with strangers and them with us. Stu has taken us to places that we would have never known about otherwise - and is incredibly easy going, flexible and easy to get along with. We consider our time out on the water with Stu some of the best times we have had while visiting the USVI. I could bareboat myself if need be - however, feel much more comfortable with someone that knows the area, both in location and seasmanship. Plus, he can pick-up the boat in StT and come pick us up - which saves me tremendous amount of precious vacation time (we travel from the SF Bay Area to visit the paradise of StJ for 2 weeks almost every year). He is incredibly trusting and completely professional. Also, having been on a couple of boats now - I agree that SeeNSki seems to have the best boats.

Anyway - my 2 cents - I feel that Stu has gone beyond just an acquintance and is now a USVI friend that unfortunately we do not see often enough.

Hello Stu from David and Robin - we cannot come this year (job conflict) and I rented our villa out to a work-friend - but hopefully can hook-up in 2013.

Safe Travels

Yes, he is still around. I contacted him a couple of weeks ago to see if he would take our group to Jost Van Dyke for the day. He did this for us a couple of years ago and it was great! Just our group on the boat. I am at work now, but can reply later with his email.Or if you do a google search for stu scott st thomas, you can find his webpage. He does weddings in the islands and this is what the webpage goes to. There is an email address for him and that is what I used when I contacted him a couple weeks ago.
Hope this helps!
