As I sit home 6 days before my month long vacation eating "land locked sushi" I'm wondering and asking is there any "good" sushi available in St. John.?! I'm wondering is there any good sushi available on St. John.? I know sushi bars show up in a lot of different places but in my years of travels to the islands I can't recall seeing or hearing of one on St. John. Can anyone shed some light on this? 6 days until a month in absolute paradise....sure kicks the butt out of the sub zero temps here in VT. Thanks, Jill

Eat your fish while you can. I visit the STT and STJ every summer and every time I cant believe how limited the fresh fish is at the markets. If you are interested in eating fish at the restaurants, it wont be a problem, there is plenty. There is also one small fish market in down town STJ but it is a little pricey. As for STT, the only place I was told to get fresh fish was from the docks when the fishing boats came in, but for some reason I was unable to get any fresh fish.I guess you have to be there the exact moment the boats come in or you are out of luck. Expect to pay $20+ per pound for locally caught fish.

Happy Fish in the Marketplace. Pretty good, seems a little pricier than STT.

I've NEVER paid 20 bucks a pound here for fresh fish in the 3 years I've lived here, wither on STJ OR STT. Out in Coral Bay across from Island Blues is a lil store where they sell fresh fish all the time.

I'll second the recommendation for Happy Fish. Their sushi is some of the best I've ever had at surprisingly reasonable prices for St. John. We are SO lucky to have this restaurant here. I just got finished eating some for lunch...as Pia said, "yummmmmmy!"

nycden - on St. Thomas you can buy fresh fish from fishermen in a few different places. Prices start around $5/lb. Fishermen are at the Frenchtown fish market pretty much daily. There are usually a couple fishermen on Saturdays, and also on some weekdays if they have fish to sell, by the field in Hospital Ground and by the corner next to Fort Mylner Shopping center in Tutu. Some sell at the road/entrance to Coral World if they have fish to sell so not necessarily on a daily basis. Same goes for Market Square which is downtown. As for timing, depending on the fish being caught/season they might be there early 6-7am or later around 9-10am and they might be there until early afternoon. Best bet is to check in the morning.

Pia,
Thanks for the Sushi recommendation. When you say the Marketplace I'm assuming you mean the second floor in the same building as the grocery store on STJ (I'm drawing a blank on the name of the grocery store)?! Is it a sit down sushi restaurant or only take-out?

We have 3 days remaining until we are on island for the month..........counting the minutes!

Thanks again,
Jill

Just got off the phone with boy in Alaska (ex STT resident and lover of raw fish)

His comment was get on the ferry and come to Buddha Bar Sushi Lounge in STT
It is worth the ride!

Not sure if it is still there, but maybe some of the on island folks can chime in

Me - I eat mine cooked so I have no opinion.. 🙂

Yep it is still there (at least the sign is still outside but I have never been inside so I think it is still there 🙂 ) but for the $40.00 per couple in ferry and taxi rides I would stay on STJ and go to Happy Fish - you can buy alot of fabulous sushi for $40.00 🙂 🙂 🙂

Islander...Thank you for all the details. I usually spend two weeks of the year on STT and or STJ and every time I strike out with the fresh fish. I always rent places with a kitchen and really look forward to checking out your suggestions.
