Hey! There is a lot of great "Island music" out there. Sure.... Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and Inner Visions are great but there seems to be some Rock-n-Rollers out there too. I would like to contribute my vote for a classic rock tune that reminds me of the USVI every time I hear it. It would definately be on my 05' Island CD Mix.

Have you ever seen the rain by CCR. The bass line is very "islandy" and the words say it all:

I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
Comin' down.... on a Sunny Day!

Any other contributions to the '05 Island CD Mix?

Ginger, no you're not unless you're in your well, very high fifties tipping to the big 60 plus one.

I could have agreed and maybe even liked you until you mentioned Christopher Cross, puleeeeeze. And that Tropical thing sounds like a bit too much new age for me.

Now if you're into a bit of jazz check out the Andy Narell & Caribbean Jazz Project. Now that's good stuff.

I am in my 30's and I secretly love CC' sailing~ But I also love rock-n-roll, Jazz, oldies, and new age. Hence, I have been working on creating the ultimate island CD. What I have so far:

Southern Cross Crosby Still & Nash
Many Rivers to Cross Jimmy Cliff
The Weight The Band
Dock at the Bay Otis Redding
Pina Colada Rupert Holmes
These are the Days Van Morrison
Two Tickets to Paradise Eddie Money
If I had a boat the song is by Lyle Lovett but I like Dave Matthews version
Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Mexico James Taylor

OK - some non-Reggae stuff on my Island mix/playlist...

Southern Cross - CSN
Blue Sky - Allman Brothers
Tequila Sunrise - Eagles
Beautiful Life - Edwin McCain
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks

And a recent mp3 download - not rock, more acoustic folk...

Catch the Wind

...you may have heard this on a recent Volvo commercial of all things. At first I thought it was Dylan, but it is actually Donovan - thats right - the "Hurdy Gurdy" man.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole... awesome island song. It was played at my wedding last year.
"Shangra La" by Mark Knopfler is the quintessential island song for me... it makes me want to dance barefoot with my wife on the beach on St. John.

Damn Jay, I now have to listen closer. Yeah, I thought it was Dylan also. Since only West Los Angeles yuppified folks buy Volvo's I didn't pay much attention.

But Ginger, if people keep bringing up his name there might be a chance albeit a slim chance in hell that he does a reunion concert, LOL

Okay... what about PABLO CRUISE - "A PLACE IN THE SUN" (the entire CD - love it!!) ??? Am I the only one old enough to remember them... I have had them in cassette, CD and now on MP3... come on, if you were in college anywhere between 1976 and 1980 you have to know of them! Oh, another one, Santana, "Supernatural" not really islandy, but love his music!!

Well, I'm ONLY thirty something but I know all these songs and have several of them on my cd. I guess I like a variety of old (Girl from Ipanema), classic (Jimmy Buffet), and new (Island in the Sun-Weezer) due to dad's and daughter's influences. There's also some milktoast stuff from my mom's feelgood collection (Cruisin-Smokey Robinson, Could it be I'm falling in love-Spinners etc.). Love new cd ideas though, thanks...

I took the original thread to be asking about ROCK music tunes (i.e. non-Reggae) that remind us of the islands/get us in the mood for vacation/etc.

Of course Marley, Tosh, etc. are no-brainers that should be on everybody's playlist who come to da ilons mon, but they aint rock.

You guys ROCK!

Where do I begin?

Promoguy - If I had to describe my age I would liken it to reposado tequila (not blanco, not anejo, but a repasado). Another way of saying it is "I am no spring chicken and I don't have an AARP card either!". LOL

Ginger - Red Red Wine! I have not heard that song in years. What a great tune. Definately on my list.

Jay - After reading your post I grabbed my Donavan "Troubadour" CD and played "Catch the Wind". If Santa brings me that new guitar I asked for, I'm downloading the tab on that one. I'm not holding my breath.... I have been very bad this year! LOL. Let's not forget about "Mello Yello" either.

Bridget - "Two tickets to Paradise"! How appropriate! Definately on the list. Dock at the bay is on my list too. Love James Taylor and acoustic guitar.

Spicy - Santana ROCKs! Too many good songs to choose from..... Hmmmmm which one do I pick? Oye como va?

Cricket - Ok..... thats twice now that someone posted the song "Somewhere over the rainbow" by Israel K. Is this one of those songs I would know if I heard it but I just don't know the song title or artist? You've got my interest.

Thank you all for some really good suggestions! Very cool.

Another song I thought of that needs to be on my 05' CD is..... drum roll..... "Santeria" by Sublime.

Thanks again..... Keep em' coming!

There's some music that has a deep STJ connection for me. Our first trip there was not long after the release of Paul Simon's "Graceland", which I heard for the first time at The Kite. The Kite was a remarkable little bar that hung off the hill where Peter Bay is now. Victor Hall owned it. Victor fell in love with "Graceland" and played it constantly. "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", in particular, stirs deep memories for me.

Another album that somehow got connected in my mind with that first experience of STJ is The Wild Tchoupitoulas. This is a gem of New Orleans Mardi Gras music that involved the Neville Brothers.

I've stopped taking CDs with me, though. We found that we didn't listen to them any longer. We seem happy to just sit out and look and listen to the tropics. I do like to go hear Inner Visions if they're on the island.

My choice for ultimate island song is Jimmy Buffett's Tin Cup..."I wanna go back to the island" and "Now the sun goes slidin' cross the water, sailboats go searchin' for the breeze, salt air it ain't thin it'll stick right to your skin and makes you feel fine" Doesn't that say it all about STJ or what? Oh Gosh, I wanna go back!!! Now!!! Right NOW!!! ARGGHHH! I can't go until February!!! I'm wearing out this message board and my JB cd. I can't wait!! Help me somebody!!!!!!!!!!! There, got that out of my system. STJ, see you February 12!!
