Hey! There is a lot of great "Island music" out there. Sure.... Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and Inner Visions are great but there seems to be some Rock-n-Rollers out there too. I would like to contribute my vote for a classic rock tune that reminds me of the USVI every time I hear it. It would definately be on my 05' Island CD Mix.

Have you ever seen the rain by CCR. The bass line is very "islandy" and the words say it all:

I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
Comin' down.... on a Sunny Day!

Any other contributions to the '05 Island CD Mix?

tmax,
The version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is actually a mix of that song and "What a Wonderful World" by the late Hawaiian artist named... get ready... Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. He plays the song on the ukelele and does a wonderful "happy" rendidtion of these 2 songs mixed together. It just puts me in a nice happy, mellow mood when I hear it. If one were inclined to download music off the internet, I'm sure one could find it very easily. 🙂

Nick,
KarrieB and I were talking about the kite on this board a couple of months back... what a great place that was. I used to camp on STJ in the early 80's when my back could handle sleeping on the ground and frequented the Kite quite a bit while there. STJ was a bit less commercialized then.

Hey Promoguy, I LOVE the milktoast stuff! It's the 60's and 70's soul music my mom use to listen to when she was depressed or heartbroken. And I also have Bob Marley on my cd!

Crickett,

You are right - it is the most amazing version of an old classic that I have ever heard.

On a sad note, the first (& only) time that I heard was at the funeral of a wife of a co-worker. (I think they had actually had the song played at their wedding a short couple of years earlier.)

Don't know if it was the setting - but, it was one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music that I have heard in a long time. Blending "Somewhere over the Rainbow" with "What a wonderful world" was really incredible. And believe me - I am not a huge fan at all of Judy Garland's Somewhere over the Rainbow - so really didn't know where this one was headed. I started out not wanting to like it - but, it was truly moving.

You guys are awesome! I love this forum. (And I have to say - I agree with Ginger & have to give Chris Cross his due for his only good song "Sailing".)

I'll add Little River Bands "Cool Change". "Well I was born in the sight of water. And its there that I feel my best. The albatrose & the whale they are my brothers. There's kind of special feeling. When you're out on the sea, alone. Staring at the full moon - like a lover."

Great, now I'll be singing it all day - could be worse!

Sue

Ok, so no reggae....

Buffet always plays Buster Poindexter's "Hot Hot Hot". It's one of the few songs that makes me want to dance/limbo/conga. Even when I don't want to :).

That's not really rocknroll either but... whatever.

Reggae's cool and I will tell you there are some great local bands on STJ. One of the nice thing about going down around Carnival time is getting to hear them all in the Carnival Village.

Now that being said.....Hot, Hot, Hot.....say wha'. Let me tell you if you have ever been on a cruise, that is one of the last songs you want to ever hear when you disembark. It is played constantly. And after a couple of times....well, it's grating. :):)

Hot Hot Hot was initally sung by a "ARROW" a calypsonian from Montserrat, not Buster Poindexter.

Well done. Too often our attention spans less than 2 minutes and our memories less than 2 years. We lose track of who's actually being 'covered'.

On a similar tone, where did 'covered' come from anyway? I thought it used to be called 're-mix' or just plain 'copied'. :S

Santana - Has to be Samba Pa Ti (Off the Lotus album Live Version)

Taj Mahal - Take a Giant Step or My Grandfather Married one fine St Kitt woman

Van Morrison - Into the Mystic

CSNY - Cowgirl in the Sand

Beatles - Across the Universe

Here comes the Sun - Richie Havens vice the Beatles version

Annie Lennox doing a Marley - Waiting in Vain

The Who - Love Reign O'er Me (those great afternoon thunder showers)

And for dancing in the living room and thinking of the beach you got to go motown

Lets get it on - Al Green
My Girl (probably over played - but everyone has to dance or their wife gives them the evil eye)

the song you sing on the way to the airport
U2 - Its a beautiful day

the song you sing when it is time to go home
Tower of Power - So very Hard to Go

Wow! I suppose I'm too old for this but I saw some numbers from you all that indicated I'm not.

I like just about all the suggestions except Kris/Kross or whatever.

Got to go with anything Buffett (Why don't we just get drunk and Scr%&@?)

My parents of WWII vintage were big Andrews Sisters fans. How about "Rum and Coca Cola? and... "Bingo, Bango, Bongo, I don't want to leave the Congo" for that matter?

Also anything from Harry Belafonte.

Still partial though to Buffett, Marley, Santanna, UB-40, Bill Bass (steel pans from St Croix) and the Beach Boys Kokomo.

Jack Johnson seems to be pretty popular around here. Banana Pancakes and Bubble Toes are kind of islandy I suppose. I was on a daysail and they played Jack Johnson nearly all day long. Any song that has to do with wind would be appropriate for today.

Wow Tom..... you got some "deep cuts" on your list. Very cool.

I am going to snag "Into the Mystic" and "Beautiful Day" from your selections. "Here comes the Sun" is another very appropriate song but I think I will stick with the Beatles version.
