I just booked a week this summer on the island. We have not been to STT for the last two years due to family issues. It seems as if violence has increased or is it just being talked about more openly? We are a large group from New Orleans so we know a little bit about gang violence, drugs, inept police and innocents being caught in the crossfire. At home we know areas to avoid and how to keep our families as safe as humanly possible in a crime ridden city. Are we crazy to be vacationing on St.Thomas? If we stick to tourist areas and good safety rules are we okay? I am beginning to second guess our choice. Two years ago we NEVER felt unsafe in anyway. The island is so beautiful it is such a shame 🙁 Thanks in advance for any advice.

Aaack!! I just did some research on New Orleans 2010 murder rate vs St.Thomas and I think we will be safer in St.Thomas! I guess I hear it so much on the news I have just gotten immune to it......

No worries. St Thomas has been my home for 27 years. Until I opened my own business 15 years ago I was never directly subjected to any sort of crime. Since then I've been directly affected twice. It's an extreme rarity that visitors are targeted. Hundreds of thousands of people such as yourself visit our islands every year and enjoy what we have to offer and the chances of your being the target of crime is minimal. Enjoy a great visit!

New Orleans has a very checkered past and presently it isn't looking too good either.

Enjoy your visit!!!! I never had any problems on St Thomas.

STT Res., sorry to hear about your run-ins. Hope weren't too bad. Don't know your business or where it is located. Wonder if I ever patronized it?

Cocoa,
If you're a typical tourist you probably have not had the good fortune of stumbling across STT Resident's lovely little restaurant. It's not in a touristy area. Most of her customers are locals and visitors in the know. Her cooking is worth searching out and the atmosphere in her "pub" is always warm and inviting. She's not allowed to tell the name of her establishment on this board so I'll give you a hint:
"Toad & Tart"

Bassman

Thank you for the hint :@)
I understand she cannot advertise her business.
I have heard about the "pub" and wonderful food, but never had a chance to patronize it.
Love "Fish & Chips"
Actually, last time was in the area I thought it was closed. Hours unknown.
I don't think I will be able to patronize it. (Read a previos post about it), I'm highly allergic to cats 🙁
Next time on St. Thomas, take out!!! (if she has, hoping)

Yes, unfortunately for the public, T&T is only open from Thur. to Sun. for dinner only if my memory is working. The Bar opens at 4PM.
In my mind I still picture a group of motorcyles parked infront of it, sorry. See www.toadandtart.com.

OK, stop already! Bassman made a quip years ago about his perception based on the exterior of the building and he's like a dog with a bloody bone about it! But yes, local Harley's are here occasionally but, Bassman, they park in the lot and not out front! They're the greatest customers and all residents.

Still love to see all the Harley vroom-vroom entourage off the cruise ship passing by mid morning, usually on a Thursday every month or so. Those machines are HUGE and most of the drivers and passengers are likewise but I do get a chuckle out of watching them as in "Easy Rider got aged". Good for them! They've also over the years contributed to the local community by talking to kids and spreading good karma.

Thanks to all for accolades and a good laugh. Cheers!

Hey guys. I am a biker. I just don't ride a Harley. If I wanted to ride a couch I'd stay home.

You will be fine if you remember TWO things!

1. Nothing good can happen after mid night.

2. If you are in a place that you do not feel comfortable than you should not be there.

That is good advice, nevertheless, most of the violence on St. Thomas is local-on-local. You might try reading the Virgin Islands Daily News Online for more information about the island's crime.
