We have rented a villa on St. John for a week this summer. Can someone please tell me, is it customary to tip the villa rental staff who take you to the villa for an "orientation" and do you tip them after the orientation, or upon checkout? Also, how do you figure the amount if you are supposed to tip them?

Tipping (as always) is at the discretion of the tipper.

If you feel that the greeter has done a great job of making you feel comfortable through a smooth arrival, a tip is a way to show it, along with your thanks. I will yield on a preference to those who actually perform this function, but I believe you may start with $20 and continue upwards from there.

You can ask if you'll be seeing the greeter again, since sometimes the greeter is also your villa manager/concierge. Then, I'd tip at the end of the stay. Many greeters or escorts intercede when there are car rental, maintenance and other problems, and their people skills can turn what could be a harrowing experience into a restful and relaxing vacation.

Housekeeping and maintenance staff often receive tips as well. Start with $4 per day for housekeepers and work up depending on what you feel, as for maintenance staff, the guideline for greeter/escort might be appreciated.

The best service providers will treat you well, regardless of whether you tip. I believe in tipping, and I don't mind doing it, even when I am "comped" on something, because that's just the way I like to roll. For lousy service I never tip, I figure the provider of such shoddy regard obviously will lack the cognizance to even miss a tip. Bad attitude, lateness, and coarse manners indicate a clock-watcher. Professionals receive tips. All others receive what they came for.

Remember, you are not required to tip, but since you ask, there ya go! My tuppence.

Our greeter last May was great and thank God we had him. We had 9 people, all of our luggage and some coolers. There's NO way we would of gotten our things to the Villa. He had a truck, loaded everything in there and was very nice.

I don't mind tipping at all in that situation.

As far as house cleaning goes, my personal preference is to not have anybody in the Villa during the week that we're there. I'm a neat freak, but on vacation, I'm not. I really don't want anybody around my things when I'm not there.

Vila greeter tipping is totally subjective. Some people do and some don't. Some of the management companies will except them and some won't. We usually flip the greeter a $20 but again, it's totally up to your discretion whether you tip them or not.

You know........our guests (and us too) end up leaving frozen meat/chicken, luncheon meat....food, beer, etc. at the end of our stay and our housekeeper really enjoys taking home whatever she would like and share with her family. This is kind of like a tip. Something to consider.

That's what we did this year, Fl Barrier Islander. We brought down a cooler filled with frozen steaks,dogs,burgers,etc... and left the unused foods for whoever got there first. I'm sure they ate like kings & queens. We did throw the greeter a $20, but half way through the week the owners went with a different villa management company, so I feel pretty comfortable with simply leaving the grub. Besides, we didn't have a mid-week house cleaning, and didn't hear from nor see anyone all week, but we were pretty clean about everything anyway. If there was more interaction, I most assuredly would have been more generous.
