1. Be clear.
Make your topic heading indicative of what you're actually posting about.
It makes it easier for people skimming the board to reference what you're talking about.
I.e., "PLEASE HELP!" and "Odd question" or "Moving here in (x) days" don't really give a good idea what your post contains.

Try to be as specific as possible.
Example: "Water in STJ OK to drink?"
or
"Restaurant recommendations in St. Croix"

2. Try to spell things correctly.
This is a minor point....but an important one!

It's MAGEN'S, not Maegen's, Megan's, Mayguns or anything else.
It's ST. JOHN. St. John's is in Singapore...and Egypt...and China...and Prince Edward Island.

3. Research!
The VINow moving and vacation boards are an invaluable resource. They have a handy "Search" function, too. So look around...do a keyword search. See if that doesn't answer your questions before you make a new post.

4. Be specific and be realistic.
If you post something vague like "I'm moving to St. Thomas in 2 weeks. I need a job, a car, and an apartment that will accept 4 dogs. Please help!".....well, be prepared to get a vague answer! The best thing to do before you move to the VI is a PMV (pre-move visit)...and lots of research.

If you want leads, give parameters. What kind of work are you looking for? How much can you spend for a car? What kind of apartment do you want?

I'm sure it can be done, but it is far, far more likely that
you will find a car, an apartment, a job, etc when you are ACTUALLY here.

5. Be smart
Don't post your email address or phone number on the message board. There are unscrupulous people...and spam web crawlers...who might take advantage of your trust. Again, the VINow board has a great alternative- the Private Messaging feature. Use it! It's fabulous!

6. And finally....
No, you can't really use a bicycle as a great means of transportation in the Virgin Islands. It's really REALLY hilly here. Mopeds/scooters are used primarily by tourists.

Yes, you need a car if you're moving here.

Yes, you will probably need a PO Box. Not that many places get mail delivery.

Yes, registering your car will be a pain in the rear.

Yes, you need to say "Good (morning, day, night)". It's common courtesy.

No, marijuana isn't legal here. Nor is cocaine, heroin, crack, LSD, acid, etc. It's not a good idea to look for "party
supplies".

Yes, you need insect repellant.

and yes, you really need to think through your move and have a LOT of money - more than you think you could possibly need- because it's expensive here!

Enjoy your vacation/move!

Best,

LR

It does not show possession. Magens was the name of the prominent Danish family for which Magens Bay was named. Their name was Magens, not Magen's. To put any punctuation on the name "magens" would be incorrect. Enough of this nonsense.

Well, there's Brewer's Bay which is next door to Lindbergh Bay. Which I suppose whomever decided to name these places these names got to decide on the apostrophe. It very well could have been Lindbergh's Bay and Brewer Bay. It was only an innocent question which has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

If you look up at the top of the page, there is a link called Board Rules and Help. It's been there for quite a while. I think it makes pretty clear what the moderator established the board rules and etiquette to be. One quote from it:

"Be nice to newcomers! If you feel a comment a newcomer made is silly or has been asked many times before – be nice and answer for the sake of being helpful. If you can not do that, then do not respond."

yep, Weary... so many a time, i am silent! because there is many a newcomer that plucks my last nerve.

someone usually helps out anyway. people rarely go neglected here, which is good. there is always somebody that is of a mind to pitch in for the millionth time, and that's what makes this board so great. there is a large loyal visitor base.

Thanks, Kim.....

I'll be smiling if I find that "nude" beach near Megan's Beach 🙂

Joe MC-

The "nude beach" near Magens (noticed I spelled it correctly THIS time, misspellings to follow, fur sure : ) ) is very easy to find and reach. From Magens Bay looking out over the water, walk to the far right of the beach. Att he end, start walking out along the rocks. You'll soon reach a rocky tiny peninsula that jets out and you'll have to walk/swim in shallow water around it. On the other side is a beach. That's it.

But, warning: the beach is frequented by gay men. If you are straight, you may not appreciate the view 😉 If you are gay, enjoy.

You are correct Bluwater. The rule is the possessive of a name ending in S takes only an apostrophe if the possessive form is not pronounced with an extra S. Hence, the possessive of Magens would be Magens'. But when referring to the Bay, it is Megans Bay and not Megans' Bay because it is not possessive. Yes. I do have a lot of time on my hands!!!

OK, I admit it...

I lose it when people come to this board expecting us to do their homework for them

I wonder what they'd do in a real, live library sometimes.

When did we stop teaching our children (of which I have none, admittedly) to do research?

Words that end in s still have their possessives by adding 's. Rule 7.18, if you've a mind to look it up. Examples given include:

Kansas's legislature
Strauss's Vienna
Dickens's novels

So IF Magens were possessive (which it clearly is not), it would be Magens's. Not the rule most of us learned in school, huh?
