I'll be traveling with my family the end of May to STJ (favorite place in the world) But, on this trip I would like to visit Tortola, is there anything I need to know. We will have our 3yr old son with us. I've been to STJ almost a dozen times & I usually just look at Tortola. I will only go toTortola for a day trip, what should I see. By the way I love the local food, I'm a flip-flop kinda person, so where could I get some great tasting food in Tortola. I already know they great places to eat in STJ. Tell Augustine at SOGO's I'm coming for the Pumpkin Soup. Peace - Felicia

I would not go to the place up stairs at Rhymers the first place after the dingy dock on Cane Garden Bay. We were there in Oct. and WOW very expensive, the food wasn't very good and we waited almost 2 hours for our meal to come! No Sorry , no discount, no free drink. Just two starving kids and 3 pretty upset adults with a big bill (no one was drinking mind you, I had one painkiller) and a bad taste in our mouths. I hear there is a woman that cooks out of her house, Miss something or other there. Saw her on the Travel Channel.

It's Mrs. Scatliffe who does local food - cracked conch, curried goat, etc. on Carrot Bay. You have to call ahead to find out what she is serving and make your choices earlier in the day. Not aware that she does other than dinners. Not inexpensive that I recall. You may want to check out the active bvi forum on traveltalkonline.com for what to see and do. Wondering about your 3-year-old and the need for a car seat in a taxi because you'll want to tour the island but not much more to do there. Cane Garden Bay draws lots of lookseers, Brewers, Smugglers (a very bumpy ride will get you there), Joshia's Bay, are other beaches. The "Sea Shell Museum" was a quirky kind of spot but the older gentleman who runs it (or did) has a whole lot of BVI history stories to tell and cooks a good local lunch too ... it too is in Carrot Bay but don't be put off by the outside.

Thank you so much! We will try Mrs. Scatliffe - can't be in the islands without some good food. The museum sounds fun, I'm not worried about looks, love to hear history from locals. Peace, Felicia

I enjoy the botanical garden in Road Town and the hike up Sage Mountain, although that one would be tough with a 3 yr old! 😉

Ensure everyone required to have a passport, has one to return to St. John. If so, have a great trip. I always eat at Capricio's, immediately across from the ferry terminal in Roadtown. GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE!!! Other than that, I just bring back the local Callwood Arundel Rum. Great stuff from the local distillery over in Cane Garden Bay.

Felicia, the entertainment gods are shining on you! The weekend of May 25-27 is the annual BVI Music Fest at Cane Garden Bay. This is an absolute "can't miss!" Go on Sat. and spend the day. Great music on stage, food by local food vendors at reasonable prices, outstanding atmosphere, fun for everyone. The best local music event in the Caribbean IMO. Check it out http://www.bvimusicfest.info/.
