My husband and I are coming into St. Thomas via cruise ship. We love this gorgeous area so much and are happy to be coming back. This time we plan on taking the ferry over to see the much talked about St. John's. We are thinking about doing the taxi tour of the island - has someone out there toured the island this way and if so can you please give us your comments good or bad and cost involved? Do you recommend touring the island another way - we are docked in St. Thomas from 7-6 on February 15th. Someday I will convince my husband to come back for a week and then we can really explore the area but for now, we want to make the most of our 1 day there.
Thanks for your input.

When you get off the ferry dock you will see all kinds of tour trucks. The kind with lots of bench seats and a roof over top. They will take you around the left side of St. John and stop at all the beautiful pull off spots so you can take pictures. There are other "gypsie" (don't belong to the taxi association) taxis that I prefer to use with the regular pick-up truck size cabs with a bench seat on each side and a roof. These guys can be gotten cheaper...especially if you get a few othe folks with you. For about 15.bucks a person with about 6 or 8 passengers they will take you on the same trip. And when you get to the Coral Bay area ....tell them you would like to go to either Skinny Legs, or Miss Lucies for lunch. They will wait for you (especially if you tell them before hand that you'll buy them lunch).
I have been going to St. Thomas and St. John every year since 1991.....this is the best deal. You might have to go past the bigger taxis over by the restroom building to find these guys...A guy I use regularly is known as Spencer For Hire... Dark green ford pick up........He's great.

Thank you James for your information. I have read the taxi fees for a St. John tour and it says 2 hours is $25. each and 3 hours is $35. each and I was wondering how much of the island they cover? I would be interested in seeing as much as possible. I had read a long time ago somewhere that there is a north shore drive that is not to be missed. Hope others will give me more information. I had read about the gypsy cab drivers and I guess James that you feel they are trustworthy. Thanks again.

The guys with the tour pick-up trucks are absolutely trustworthy and professionals...they just basically don't belong to the association over on St. John. their rates aren't posted or fixed...you can haggle with them , and you can customize your tour.and do things like go to lunch out at Coral Bay. The association guys with the big tour trucks want to take you on a fixed tour and come back to get another load. Just be sure before you get into ANY cab that you have gotten the price FIRST. I have done this just about every year since 91 and usually look for the same couple of guys. The last time with 8 people we paid $15 apiece and bought him lunch for a nice leisurly tour. I am returning on Feb 4th for 3 weeks and will again take my guests on the same tour. Enjoy you stay....Jimbo

Hi,

Leaving for St.Thomas/St. John in a week, everyone's posts are great! If we leave St. Thomas to go to St. John on Sunday and want to go to Miss Lucie's for brunch, what's the best way to do that? Do a tour type thing and have them stop there or just go there and check things out? Any info would be wonderful. I have only been to St. Thomas on a cruise ship for a day and it was great, so looking forward to everyone's info. Allison
