I just wanted to post my trip summary from my vacation back in September of 2005 to St. Thomas. We stayed at Secret Harbour resort located on Nazareth Bay. Hopefully I will be able to offer some advice to people planning a trip...
For photographs from our vacation look here: "http://photographicmemory.photosite.com/stthomas/"

Places to Eat:

Molly Malones- Located in Red Hook. This had to be one of our favorite restauraunts on the island. You can sit either inside or outside, they have a big screen television to watch sports. Definitely try the Shannon River Chicken (Chicken strips and shrimp covered in a butter sauce), and also try the conch fritters! Molly Malones is casual, and the prices are a little more reasonable than other places. Also try the Bushwaker here, its similiar to a White Russian. In total the meal came to about $90 for appetizers, drinks and entrees for two people. If you go for breakfast try the Brittingham Breakfast Club.

Blue Moon Cafe: Located at Secret Harbour Resort, which is where we stayed. We ate here the first night we arrived in St. Thomas. I got the Lemon-Thyme Chicken, which was incredible and my husband got the duck. We also trip the coconut shrimp for an appetizer. For desert I would definetely recommened the Triple Chocolate Cheese Cake, with an oreo crust. The atmosphere is incredible because the dining is outside on the beach, and the sunset is gorgeous on Nazereth Bay. The price is a little expensive for the portions ($80 for two) but I thought it was worth it.

Burrito Bay Deli: Red Hook. This place was great. We stopped here a few times. Definitely try the chicken quesidilla, it comes with salsa, sour cream and mango chutney.

The Green House: Located in Charlotte Amalie. We went here because Cuzzins was closed, and our driver told us it was good and reasonably priced. We happened to get there at happy hour, which meant $3 off appetizers and two for one drinks. The food was decent, they only drawback was the $20 dollars we spent on the cab ride.

Duffys Love Shack: Red Hook. This place was amazing, I can only imagine what it must be like during peak season. The drinks are good and reasonably priced, and you get to keep the ceramic cups to take home with you. I have 10 cups that I collected. Try the "Pirates Painkiller", "Dr. Feelgood", and "Thar She Blows".

Places to Avoid:

The Caribbean Saloon: Red Hook. We ordered nachos and conch fritters here. The nachos were stale, and the conch fritters were overcooked and rubbery. We paid our $18 and headed downstairs to Molly Malones.

Cold Stone Creamery: Way overpriced. Pick up ice cream at the store if you can.

Other Things:

A taxi from Secret Harbour to Red Hook cost my husband and I $5 dollars one way. From Secret Harbour to Charlotte Amalie it cost my husband and I $20 dollars one way. Taking a taxi is expensive, but I would not recommened driving. The roads are extremely narrow, and can get confusing at times because you are on the opposite side of the road. My advice is not to risk it.

When we stayed from September 10- September 16 the island was practically empty. Our taxi driver Stanley told us that this was the islands slow time, not too many cruise ships coming into port. Make sure you check ahead before you go out, because when there are no cruise ships in port a lot of stores/restauraunts close down.

Snorkeling:

Secret Harbour: The snorkeling here was good, but the water was somewhat cloudy. We saw parrot fish, squid, but no sea turtles.

Coki Beach: The water was beautiful here, crystal clear with white sand. We saw a number of fish here, and we also saw a shark remora. When we first saw it I thought it was a shark, it was about 3-5 ft in length. Later we found out that it was a harmless remora. I took a lot of underwater video here and it came out great. The only thing I didn't like about Coki Beach is that we went on a day when there was a ship in port and the place was packed. We were also harrassed every time we go out of the water by people asking if we were leaving soon and wanted a taxi. Also, people will offer you a beach chair but not tell you until after that it is going to cost you $7 bucks a person, so watch out.

Trunk Bay: St. Johns. This beach was incredible and worth the $5 ferry ride. Crystal clear water and soft white sand beach. We were the first people to arrive at the beach that day, and upon entering the water with our snorkel gear we were able to get up close and personal with a huge sting ray. Trunk Bay has an underwater guided trail which was pretty amazing.

Some other tips:

Read the license plates of people offering you a ride, if there not a taxi don't get in even if it's cheaper. While we were in Red Hook near Duffy's we watched a woman get her purse stolen by a teen, right in broad daylight with tons of people around.

Avoid the booth at the airport that offers a discount to Bluebeards Castle. They promise free rum and coupons to use at restauraunts, but they are just trying to lure you into buying timeshares. Trust me, we signed up and thought "how bad could it be". Well they wasted two hours of our vacation, and my husband finally had to say were not interested, at which the man became very rude to us and made us wait another 15 minutes before letting us leave the building.

Well if anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I'm sure I'm leaving a ton of things out.

If you want to see some of our St. Thomas vacation pictures visit my photosite at "http://photographicmemory.photosite.com/stthomas/". I also included pictures of our one bedroom suite at Secret Harbour if anyone is interested in staying there on there vacation.

Angela-

Thank you for this trip report. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Was this your first trip? Would you return?

You made a few very good points that I would like to highlight....

1. Yes, if you are on a beach and someone offers to get you something....a chair, an umbrella, etc...expect to pay for it (unless it is YOUR resort). Just keep repeating to yourself :"nothing is free - nothing is free" 🙂
_________________________________________________________________

2. Coki beach is ridiculously crowded when the ships are in. IMO, it is NOT enjoyable at those times. Coki is one of my favorite VI Beaches, and should not be missed by any visitors. But, DO NOT go when the ships are in. The beach is small and they bring too many people. So, it is hard to find a spot to sit!! Anybody been to the Jersey shore on 4th of July? I couldn't even find a spot in the water to have a little peace. At least Magen's is large enough that you can still find a quiet spot when the ships are in. If there is one day on your visit schedule when there are no ships, go to Coki on that day!

Ahhh, the dreaded timeshare tours. Thank you for bringing this up because I have always forgotten to warn about this. In the airport, there is a little alcove looking store that is near the car rental desks. I forget what it is called--- something alluring like "Visitor's Center"...and they have all kinds of booklets and visitor pamphlets on the walls.

When you go in, they'll ask you where you are staying and ask if you plan on doing any daysails, etc. Then they'll tell you they can get you discounts. I forget exactly what the deal was when I visited them on my last trip, but it wasn't a "here's a coupon" kind of thing. I needed to do something or pay something in return...and they are pushy.

You all know how it is, a nice person like me will sit there and smile and listen just because I don't want to be rude and I know this person has a job to do, but I know I am not going to do whatever it is they want me to do.

Now, this place may have some useful island guides that contain real coupons. I have run across several visitor guides that offer real coupons (like 2 for 1 drinks), and maybe someone will refresh the memory and say the names of those guides so that you can grab them in this place. But, if the people ask you over to the counter to discuss more than that, don't say I didn't warn you. Again "nothing is free - nothing is free"
___________________________________________________________________

My experience with driving has been such that never I advocate taking taxis, unless one placs to be bombed the entire time. So, I disgaree with that point.

And I'm sorry you had a bad meal at the Saloon. That has also not been my experience.

This was our first trip to St. Thomas, and definitely will not be our last. We are already thinking of planning another trip for next year. I would definitely stay at Secret Harbour again, we had a wonderful time.
