If you get to Trunk Bay before the fee booth is open, does someone come around and collect it from those already on the beach? And are the booth hours 9 to 4?

If no one is in the booth then you do not have to pay - they do not collect earlier. I've seen folks in the booth before 9, but they waved us through. So, if you are an early bird it will be free. Also, if the waves are big the attendant will normally tell you to go take a look before you pay.

Even on the busiest days, Trunk Bay is pretty quiet before 10 and after 4.
