hi. i have read somewhere that the utilities have a tendency of going out frequently due to whatever reason. 🙂 i was just wondering if that was true, and about how often do they seem to go out? i have never had the priviledge of visiting st. thomas, but there is a slight chance that i may be doing so during this year. i cant wait 🙂 i am guessing, though, that the inconvience of maybe having the utilities going out is extremely outweighed by the wonders of the islands. 🙂 🙂

thank you

Good guess.
Our last vacation to STJ had power go off over the entire island for 6-7 hours. Rum drinks, island breezes and candle light...priceless.

Yes, our power does go out occasionally and there is no rhyme or reason! It simply goes out! Can be for one second to several hours! Keep a flashlight somewhere handy and/or candles. If you use candles, please be careful as normal, but also be sure not to spill wax. Put the candle on something to protect furniture. Sit back, have a drink and enjoy the peace and quiet! If you are staying in a hotel, you shouldn't be affected for the most part. Some villas, not all, have generator back up.

Welcome to our world! WAPA (water and power authority) does the best with what they have and i'll leave it at that. Sometimes current will go out for less than 2 minutes. Sometimes it may be out as long as a few hours. It's very hit and miss. We've went months without a flicker and then have it go out 3 or 4 times in one week.

If you're in a hotel, you're good. I would say 95% of the hotels have generators that kick in as soon as power goes offline. Some restaurants have them too. As sherri said; if you're renting a villa, it may or may not have a generator but the ones that I know abot has generators that is hard wired to the house permenatly with a set up like the hotels/businesses to kick in when power goes out.

Enjoy!
