Contacted VZ about cell phone coverage on STT and STJ. While they do not guarantee coverage, just wondering if there is any coverage at all? They told me that I have a "tri-mode" phone which is designed to pick up all types of signals, so if there is a signal, I should be able to tap into it...

While there May 5-12 our Verizon phones had coverage in Cruz Bay and the Westin. Didn't even try them farther out on the island, though. Our friend's Nextel phone didn't work on STJ, but did work on Jost.

Our Verizon phone worked almost everywhere but our condo. It was pretty easy to get service. Don't forget...it's roaming charges for every single call you make.

We have Nextel too and so we picked up a cheap Cingular go-phone from walmart for $18 which included $10 in airtime at .10/min. Cingular/ATT have the best coverage on STJ (including Coral Bay) for what amounted to be an $8 phone it was a easily justifiable expense. You can even come back and sell the phone back on ebay for $10-15.

Win-win!

I have Cingular and, depending where you are actually at at the time of the call, I receive phone service in STT, STJ and the BVI's. There are blind spots tho.

I have Cingular, also, and wonder how much it would cost me per minute to call US from STT? On the other hand, my adult children et al will be with us so not sure how much I'd use the phone anyway!

If you call Cingular, you can get a special plan put on your phone for I think a extra $10 and it will cover your calls while your in STT, STJ, and BVI. Unlimited calls in all 3 areas. Very nice to have, been doing that for the past 2 years. Then, when you get back just call Cingular and drop it.

Yeah, roaming charges was something I didnt have. Just paid the extra $10, and if I made a call during the week before 7pm, then I was charged just as I would be back home.

Are you talking about Verizon or Cingular when you said no roaming.

Cingular=no roaming
Verizon=roaming

I was quoted 69 cents a minute in the USVI with Verizon. Same on Puerto Rico. I had no problem using it from the Westin.
